Een tentoonstelling en project van kunstenaars Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson i.s.m. SIGN projectspace & Fiona van den Bergh, organisator, performer en stadsgids.
Met een feestelijke opening op zaterdag 25 oktober 17.00 uur!
SIGN zal van 25 oktober t/m 20 december drie recente en doorlopende kunstprojecten van Castro & Ólafsson tentoonstellen, die hun meerstemmige, gemeenschap gebaseerde, geëngageerde, en interventie gerichte kunstpraktijk laat zien. Daarnaast zal SIGN fungeren als hoofdkwartier en verzamelpunt voor het Groningse Circuit of Commons, waar een groot aantal commons een bijdrage zal leveren aan het open programma. Kom langs, neem deel, en uit je stem. Laten we SIGN gebruiken als common!
‘Het Recht op Groningen – Circuit of Commons’ staat voor het recht op diversiteit, het recht op huisvesting en het recht op openbare en gemeenschappelijke ruimtes, voor zelf georganiseerde, sociale, culturele, artistieke en ecologische initiatieven in Groningen. Waar een behoefte is aan ruimte voor rijkdom die niet in geld wordt uitgedrukt.
Op de tentoonstelling wordt o.a. de film-in-process getoond van de eerste interventie van ‘Het Recht op Groningen – Circuit of Commons’ tijdens de Groningse Onderstroom demonstratie op 27 september jl. met een monumentaal textiel werk. Het immense spandoek is ontworpen door Libia & Ólafur en i.s.m. de sociale Groninger naaiateliers Draadkracht, Vanhulley en het Eindhovende Awesome vervaardigd.
De samenwerking tussen Castro & Ólafsson is begonnen in Groningen waar ze elkaar ontmoetten tijdens hun studie MFA aan het Frank Mohr Instituut, en in april 1998 hielden zij samen hun eerste tentoonstelling in SIGN.
Castro & Ólafsson zijn al jaren internationaal gepassioneerd bezig met het ondersteunen van sociale en politieke processen en initiëren van nieuwe coalities. Eerder in 2011 vertegenwoordigden zij IJsland op de Biënnale van Venetië met hun werk Under Deconstruction.
Werken uit hun recente projecten met de burgerbeweging voor de nieuwe Grondwet in IJsland en met ‘La Casa Invisible’ in Málaga worden in deze expo getoond. Ook het recent geïnitieerde project ‘Het Recht op Eindhoven – Circuit of Commons’, dat met diverse Eindhovense collectieven doorgaat en ondersteund wordt door het Van Abbemuseum, zal bij SIGN geëxposeerd worden.
In navolging hiervan zal, nieuw, het project ‘Het Recht op Groningen – Circuit of Common’ gepresenteerd worden.

With a festive opening on Saturday, October 25, at 17.00 hrs
From October 25th to December 20th, SIGN will exhibit three recent and ongoing art projects by Castro & Ólafsson, showcasing their polyphonic, community-based, engaged, and intervention-oriented art practice.
SIGN will also serve as the headquarters and gathering point for the Groningen Circuit of Commons, where a large number of commoners will contribute to the open program. Come by, participate, and have your say. Let’s use SIGN as a common!
“The Right to Groningen – Circuit of Commons” represents the right to diversity, the right to housing, and the right to public and communal spaces, for self-organized, social, cultural, artistic, and ecological initiatives in Groningen. Where there is a need for space for wealth that is not expressed in money.
The exhibition features, among other things, the film-in-process of the first intervention of “The Right to Groningen – Circuit of Commons” during the ‘Groningse Onderstroom’ demonstration on September 27th, featuring a monumental textile work. The huge banner was designed by Libia & Ólafur and created in collaboration with the social Groningen sewing workshops Draadkracht, Vanhulley and Eindhoven’s Awesome.
The collaboration between Castro & Ólafsson began in Groningen, where they met during their MFA studies at the Frank Mohr Institute. In April 1998, they held their first exhibition together at SIGN.
For years, Castro & Ólafsson have been passionately involved internationally in supporting social and political processes and initiating new coalitions.
Works from their previous projects with the citizens’ movement for a new Constitution in Iceland and with “La Casa Invisible” in Málaga are featured in this exhibition. The recently initiated project ‘The Right to Eindhoven – Circuit of Commons’, which continues with various Eindhoven collectives and is supported by the Van Abbemuseum, will also be exhibited at SIGN. Following this, the new project ‘The Right to Groningen – Circuit of Commons’ will be presented.
Over de Werken – About the Works
1. ‘Het Recht op Groningen – Circuit of Commons’ (2025 – ongoing)
staat voor het recht op diversiteit, het recht op huisvesting en het recht op openbare en gemeenschappelijke ruimtes, voor zelfgeorganiseerde sociale, culturele, artistieke en ecologische initiatieven in Groningen. Waar een behoefte is aan ruimte voor rijkdom die niet in geld wordt uitgedrukt.
Dit project is de tweede editie van het doorlopend kunstproject en -initiatief op maatschappelijk schaal dat zijn eerste editie kende als The Right to Eindhoven – Circuit of Commons.
Getoond wordt o.a. het videowerk in-proces van de eerste publieke interventie van ‘Het Recht op Groningen – Circuit of Commons’ met performer Milly, tijdens de Groningse Onderstroom demonstratie op 27 september jl, en met een monumentaal textiel werk, dat ook in de tentoonstelling te zien is. Het textielwerk is ontworpen door Libia & Ólafur en i.s.m. de sociale naaiateliers Draadkracht, Vanhulley en Awesome vervaardigd.

This project is the second edition of the ongoing community-scale art project and initiative that first launched as The Right to Eindhoven – Circuit of Commons. The exhibition features, among other things, the video work-in-progress of the first public intervention of “The Right to Groningen – Circuit of Commons” during the Groningen Onderstroom demonstration on September 27th, featuring a monumental textile work. This textile work was designed by Libia & Ólafur and created in collaboration with the social sewing workshops Draadkracht, Vanhulley, and Awesome.

2. ‘Het Recht op Eindhoven – Circuit of Commons’ (2024 – ongoing)
De Circuit van Commons Eindhoven werd geïnitieerd als onderdeel van het nuttige kunstproject (*Arte Útil) The Right to Eindhoven – Circuit of Commons van Castro & Ólafsson met onderzoeker-curator Gemma Medina en een breed netwerk van zelfs-beheerde initiatieven op sociaal, cultureel en milieugebied in Eindhoven. Het project was opgenomen in de tentoonstelling Positions 8: Art is a Verb en eiste het recht op de stad versus neoliberaal ontwikkelingsbeleid dat zich voornamelijk op één sector (technologie) richt. Het Van Abbemuseum is daarbij een ondersteunende partnerinstelling. De groepen zijn solidair bijeengekomen als reactie op de exponentiële verdwijning van gemeenschappelijke ruimtes, de woningcrisis, het gebrek aan representatie voor de natuur en de voortdurende afname van natuurlijke ruimtes, en, in het algemeen, de toenemende uitdagingen waarmee burger initiatieven en de gemeenschap in Eindhoven worden geconfronteerd. Het project en initiatief is onder andere geïnspireerd en geïnformeerd door burgers geïnitieerde en beheerde sociale en culturele centrum La Casa Invisible in Malaga, waarmee Libia en Ólafur, samen met Gemma Medina, de afgelopen drie jaar hebben gewerkt.
In de tentoonstelling zijn beelden te zien van performatieve interventies en documenten in ontwikkeling waarin het Recht op Eindhoven en de ontwikkeling van nuttige, dienstige kunstwerken worden vastgelegd, zoals Het Protocol van Intenties van Libia & Ólafur in samenwerking met het Circuit of Commons Eindhoven. Het doel is om met de gemeenteraad tot een overeenkomst te komen voor een democratischer beleid voor de stedelijke commons, het recht op de stad en de natuur.

2. “The Right to Eindhoven- Circuit of Commons” (2024 – ongoing)
The Circuit of Commons Eindhoven was initiated as part of the useful art project (*Arte Útil) The Right to Eindhoven – Circuit of Commons by Castro & Ólafsson with researcher-curator Gemma Medina and a wide network of Eindhoven-based social, cultural and environmental self-managed initiatives. The project was included in the exhibition Positions 8: art is a verb, and demanded the right to the city versus neoliberal policies of development focused just mainly on one sector (a.k.a technology), and has Van Abbemuseum as a support partner institution. The groups have come together in solidarity in response to the exponential disappearance of common spaces, the housing crisis, the lack of representation for nature and constant reduction of natural spaces, and overall, the increasing challenges that grassroots and community-led initiatives face in Eindhoven. The project and initiative is inspired and informed, among other things, by the citizen-initiated and -run social and cultural center La Casa Invisible in Malaga, with which Libia and Ólafur, along with Gemma Medina, have worked for the past three years on the useful art project The Rehabilitation of La Casa Invisible – Chapter 1.
In the show you can see images from performative interventions and documents in proces stating the Right to Eindhoven and the articulation of useful art works, as The Protocol of Intentions, from Libia & Ólafur in collaboration with the Circuit of Commons Eindhoven, which is meant to achieve an agreement with the city council towards a more democratic policy for the urban commons, the rigth to the city and nature.
Currently, the Circuit of Commons includes: Bloemfontein (met Bron van Doen en Awesome Kleidingruil Atelier ), The Feminist Wave Eindhoven, Queerhooven, T56, De Fabriek, Het Inkijkmuseum, Madlab, DEMO, Stichting ZinZèn, Trash?! School, Stichting a Forest, Queer Art Jam, The Stroomhuis, Relationele Gastenprojecten Eikenburg, Een bos naaien and Albert van Abbehuis.
3. In Search Of Magic – A Proposal for A New Constitution for The Republic of Iceland,
Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson in collaboration with The Magic Team* (2017 – ongoing)
Libia Castro en Ólafur Ólafsson, zijn een kunstenaarsteam uit Spanje en IJsland wonend in Rotterdam, die ook vaak in Spanje en IJsland werkt. Deze ruimte toont kunstwerken van de afgelopen 7 jaar die deel uitmaken van het kunst project betrokken bij de burgerbeweging voor een nieuwe grondwet voor IJsland. Samen met activisten nodigden Castro en Ólafsson componisten, muzikanten en het publiek uit voor een meerstemmige muziek- en kunstperformance. Die bracht alle 114 artikelen van de in 2011 voorgestelde nieuwe grondwet tot leven. Het nieuwe voorstel ontstond in na de financiële crisis van 2008 en het instorten van de banken en de nationale munt. Hoewel twee derde van de kiezers het voorstel in 2012 goedkeurde, werd het proces door politici geblokkeerd.
De werken hier zijn hulpmiddelen voor activisten en betrokken burgers. Een 5 uur durende muziekvideo documenteert de collectieve ‘performance-demonstratie’ In Search Of Magic – A Proposal for A New Constitution for The Republic of Iceland en reflecteert daarop. Het Magic Team geiniteerd door Libia en Ólafur zette de grondwet om in muziek en actie, geschreven en uitgevoerd door bekende componisten, muzikanten en activisten en in het video gemonteerd met archiefbeelden van de “Pots and Pans Revolutie” periode. Het werk presenteert en verbeeld een collectief geheugen dat reflecteert op de grondwettelijke beweging van 2008 tot 2021.
Aðfaraorð / Preamble (2020) is een korte muziekvideo die werkt als een Agit-trailer. Als onderdeel van het kunstproject gebruikten we het voor campagnevoering tijdens mobilisaties in 2020/21. Het kondigde ook de 5 uur film aan, die gemaakt werd van de polyfone performance-demonstratie.

3. In Search Of Magic – A Proposal for A New Constitution for The Republic of Iceland,
Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson in collaboration with The Magic Team* (2017 – ongoing)
Libia Castro and Ólafur Ólafsson are an artist duo from Spain and Iceland based in Rotterdam, also working in Reykjavík and Málaga. The show combines artworks from the last seven years, which are part of the art project engaged with the civil movement for the New Constitutional Proposal for Iceland. Along with activists, Castro and Ólafsson invited composers, musicians, organisations, and the public to help create a multi-vocal music and art performance. This brought to life all 114 articles of the new Icelandic constitution, proposed in 2011 after the 2008 financial crisis and the collapse of the banks and national currency. Though two-thirds of voters approved the proposal in 2012, politicians blocked the process.
The works here serve as tools for engaged citizens and activists. A 5-hour musical video documents the collective ‘performance-demonstration ’In Search Of Magic – A Proposal for A New Constitution for The Republic of Iceland . The Magic Team initiated by Libia and Ólafur turned the proposed constitution into music, written and performed by well-known composers, musicians and activists and in the film edited with archival footage from Icelandic broadcasters and other film makers. The work performs a collective memory, reflecting on the constitutional movement from 2008 to 2021.
Aðfaraorð / Preamble (2020) is a music video that works as an Agit-trailer. As part of the art project we used it for campaigning during mobilizations in 2020/21 and it also announced the 5 h film work, made from the polyphonic performance-demonstration.
4. The Rehabilitation of La Casa Invisible – Chapter I (2021 – ongoing)

La Casa Invisible is een culturele en activistische ruimte in het hart van Málaga. Het wordt bedreigd door gentrificatie en toeristische projecten en tegenstand van conservatieve politici in de gemeenteraad. De kunstenaars werken samen met de gemeenschap om deze plek te beschermen, bewustzijn te vergroten en de duurzaamheid ervan te bevorderen. In deze ruimte vind je documenten en kunstwerken resulterend uit artistieke interventies die deel uitmaken van het project, samen met een nieuw videowerk, gemaakt in samenwerking met de gemeenschap. De video portretteert het huis en de gemeenschap, hun strijd en uitvindingen, en presenteert en reflecteert op het architectonische plan van het huis om het gebouw te restaureren met architect José Manuel López Osorio.

4. The Rehabilitation of La Casa Invisible – Chapter I (2021 – ongoing)

La Casa Invisible is a cultural and activist space in the centre of Málaga, but it’s under threat of eviction from gentrification, tourism projects and the opposition from right-wing politics in the city council. The artists are working with the community to *protect it, raise awareness and promote its sustainability. In this room, you’ll find documents and art works from artistic interventions and activities that are part of the project, together with a new video-work made in collaboration with the community, that portraits the house and it´s people, their struggle and inventions, and presents and reflects on the house´s Architectural Plan to restore the building with architect José Manuel López Osorio.
