Sugar Lift Etching Workshop

(free)

by Shuang Xu and Miguel Teodoro

Saturday Oktober 24, Shuang Xu and Miguel Teodoro are hosting a sugar lift etching workshop at Stichting Sign, from 12:30 till 16;30 hrs. Together you will draw and write straight onto metal plates with a mixture made from beet sugar.

The workshop is in dialogue with Shuang’s installation Sweet Roots, on view in the exhibition Ubiquitousssssssssssssssssugar at Sign Project Space, curated by Diego Virgen.

Sweet Roots looks at the cultural, botanical, and material histories of sugar. It begins with the Tangshuang pu (糖霜譜), a Song dynasty treatise on ways of making  sugar in China, traditionally used as medicine. The research investigates its transformation into a global commodity, following the routes of sugar production and the labour behind it, connecting Canton, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
During the workshop, we’ll discuss these histories while using sugar to create sugar-lift prints.
