Now that only is fruitful which allows free play to the imagination. The more we see, the more we must be able to imagine; and the more we imagine, the more we must think we see.”

Performance by Antrianna Moutoula

In his late 18th-century philosophical treatise Laocoon: An Essay upon the Limits of Painting and Poetry, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing argues that the most potent scene an artist can depict is the so-called “pregnant moment”—the point in the narrative just before or just after a climactic event transpires. According to Lessing, this is due to the way in which the viewer can fill in the gaps themselves: “Now that only is fruitful which allows free play to the imagination. The more we see, the more we must be able to imagine; and the more we imagine, the more we must think we see.”
Preludes and Aftermaths is an exhibition in which six artists each propose a work that pertains to this particular notion of “the moments before or the moments after an event takes place.” Oscillating between memory and prophecy, the exhibition functions as a hub world from which the viewer can encounter an array of glimpses into alternative futures and corrupted systems, forever denying culmination.
Stemming from an acutely singular and reciprocal relationship with their material, each artist’s work represents a particular preoccupation with the passage of time, both in the figurative sense as well as the durational. Frozen moments of anticipation, decay, and endless driving loops reverberate throughout the space, placing the viewer in a perpetual state of fast forward, rewind, and pause, but never play.
