After years of confronting fossil sponsorship in the cultural sector, nearly every major Dutch museum has stepped away from these toxic partnerships. The Groninger Museum is now the last one standing. As Fossil Free Culture NL continues this work, we want to open a space where we can think, make, and act together, a space to explore how art and activism can push this and other social shifts further.

In this full-day workshop we’ll work together to explore and map interventions that shifted narratives, exposed contradictions, or created cracks where imagination could take root. To name some – Guerilla Girls, The Yes Men!, Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army, Laboratory of Insurrectionary Imagination a.o.. We will explore and learn with and from each other about how the strategic power of activism weaves together with the poetic power of art.

Our exercises combine embodied practice, conceptual framing, and collaborative making. We will use contradictions as material for learning, and treat questions as catalysts for experimentation. Doing so, we’ll look for our own answers to questions that “… art as resistance asks – what does it really mean to be alive right now? Where are the contradictions in how we are living? What does a truly just world look like? What is stopping it from becoming a reality?” (Amber Massie-Bloomfield).

What to expect
– A collective learning environment where artistic and activist methodologies meet
– Exercises that weave together movement, making, reflection, and dialogue
– A space for honest engagement with contradictions and emotions
– Examples from real struggles to help ground conceptual ideas
– Encounters that build community among people experimenting with art as infrastructure for social change.

Participation is open to everyone, including artists, activists, organisers, students, cultural workers, and others curious to explore where art and activism meet. No previous training or experience is needed. We simply ask you to bring your own “tools”: the injustices you care about, the creative gestures you engage with, your curiosity, and your commitment to a more just world.

This event is part of the project ‘The Right to Groningen – Circuit of Commons’, initiated by Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson in collaboration with Fiona van den Bergh and many different social, cultural and ecological initiatives. The program of the project takes place in an exhibition of work by Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson, which you can visit until December 20th.

Na jarenlang te hebben geworsteld met fossiele sponsoring in de culturele sector, heeft bijna elk groot Nederlands museum zich teruggetrokken uit deze giftige samenwerkingsverbanden. Het Groninger Museum is nu het laatste overgebleven museum. Terwijl Fossil Free Culture NL dit werk voortzet, willen we een ruimte creëren waar we samen kunnen denken, maken en handelen, een ruimte om te onderzoeken hoe kunst en activisme deze en andere maatschappelijke verschuivingen verder kunnen brengen.

In deze workshop van een hele dag gaan we samen aan de slag om interventies te verkennen en in kaart te brengen die verhalen hebben veranderd, tegenstrijdigheden hebben blootgelegd of scheuren hebben gecreëerd waar verbeelding wortel kon schieten. Om er een paar te noemen – Guerilla Girls, The Yes Men!, Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army, Laboratory of Insurrectionary Imagination en meer. We zullen met en van elkaar ontdekken en leren hoe de strategische kracht van activisme samengaat met de poëtische kracht van kunst.

Onze oefeningen combineren belichaamde praktijk, conceptuele framing en collaboratief creëren. We gebruiken tegenstrijdigheden als leermateriaal en behandelen vragen als katalysatoren voor experimenten. Zo gaan we op zoek naar onze eigen antwoorden op vragen die “…kunst als verzet” oproept: wat betekent het nu echt om te leven? Waar zitten de tegenstrijdigheden in hoe we leven? Hoe ziet een werkelijk rechtvaardige wereld eruit? Wat verhindert dat deze werkelijkheid wordt?” (Amber Massie-Bloomfield).

Wat te verwachten
– Een collectieve leeromgeving waar artistieke en activistische methodologieën samenkomen
– Oefeningen die beweging, maken, reflectie en dialoog verweven – Een ruimte voor oprechte betrokkenheid bij tegenstrijdigheden en emoties
– Voorbeelden uit echte worstelingen om conceptuele ideeën te onderbouwen
– Ontmoetingen die een gemeenschap creëren tussen mensen die experimenteren met kunst als infrastructuur voor sociale verandering.

Deelname staat open voor iedereen, inclusief kunstenaars, activisten, organisatoren, studenten, cultureel werkers en anderen die nieuwsgierig zijn naar de ontmoeting tussen kunst en activisme. Er is geen vooropleiding of ervaring vereist. Wij vragen u simpelweg om uw eigen ‘gereedschap’ mee te nemen: de onrechtvaardigheden die u aangaan, de creatieve gebaren die u maakt, uw nieuwsgierigheid en uw inzet voor een rechtvaardiger wereld.

Dit event maakt deel uit van het project ‘The Right to Groningen – Circuit of Commons’, geïnitieerd door Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson in samenwerking met Fiona van den Bergh en diverse sociale, culturele en ecologische initiatieven.
