Decolonial Dialogues, a collaboration between Sign– Platform for young art, and the Research group Image in Context of Minerva, Groningen, explores the obstacles, challenges, possibilities for artists in their ambition to decolonize all kind of practices they cultivate or are confronted with.
In this fifth ‘Decolonial Dialogue’ we speak with Nasma Al-Shufta, spatial designer, researcher and activist. She has currently developed a collaborative work in SIGN (in collaboration with Nika Dundua) to create space for dialogue on identity and belonging, inclusion, exclusion and boundaries.
Previously she recreated the rooms she had to live in during her 2-year journey as an asylum seeker in the Netherlands: small rooms, waiting rooms, rooms without privacy, trauma rooms, plastic rooms….

Decolonial Dialogues, een samenwerking tussen SIGN en ‘Research Group Image in Context, Academie Minerva, onderzoekt de obstakels, uitdagingen, mogelijkheden voor kunstenaars in hun ambitie om hun eigen praktijken, en die waarmee ze geconfronteerd zijn, te dekoloniseren.
In deze vijfde ‘Decolonial Dialogue’ spreken we met Nasma Al-Shufta, ruimtelijk ontwerper, onderzoeker en activist. Momenteel heeft ze in SIGN een gezamenlijk werk ontwikkelt (ism Nika Dundua) om ruimte te scheppen voor dialoog over identiteit en erbij horen, inclusie, uitsluiting en grenzen.
Eerder recreëerde ze de kamers waarin ze moest leven tijdens haar 2 jaar durende reis als asielzoeker in Nederland: kleine kamers, wachtkamers, kamers zonder privacy, traumakamers, plastic kamers….

We warmly invite you to a collaborative performance by Christian Johannes (@christian_johannes_) and Sam Zanardo (@smtnah), where sonic landscapes and foolness will collide in a mendacious act of truth-telling—where voicelessness, resonance, speculation, and disappearance-into-noise will become sites of subversion and meaning-making.
A hypersexualized jester will inhabit these slippery terrains, navigating Christian’s immersive soundscape through voice, noise, and speculative storytelling. Through this interplay of sonic premeditations, truth-telling turns into disruption, flirting with the boundaries between presence and absence.

Join us for an afternoon of creativity, reflection, and collective making! Whether you’re an experienced stitcher or completely new to embroidery, this open workshop invites you to engage with memories and storytelling, using intuition to guide the movements of our hands and bodies.

• All materials provided: scrap textiles, threads, needles, scissors — everything you need to get started.
• Drop in anytime between 14:00-17:00 h. Stay as long as you’d like; come and go freely! We’ll be there to guide you throughout.
• Together, we’ll reflect on the relationship between textiles, gestures, and storytelling as we create a shared collective work.
The workshop will be recorded as part of a future publication on textiles and conversations. If you prefer not to be recorded, just let us know! We’re can pause or simply write down key points from discussions instead.

MEER over de presentaties
De twee projecten van Trudy Oosterhuis en van duo Suzanne Bernhardt & Philipp Kolmann zijn seizoensgebonden. De kunstenaars hebben afgelopen jaar tijdens hun vooronderzoek veel verkenningen gedaan in Ezinge en omstreken die gepaard gingen met korte residenties. Resultaten combineren zich deze zomer in presentaties en activiteiten op Grasland!
Trudy Oosterhuis houdt zich bezig met ouderwetse agriculturele landbouwmethodes en maakt relatie tussen landbewerking, plantaardige materialen en geografische geschiedenis. Oosterhuis maakt connectie met het oude landschap uit de 8 en 9e eeuw; Lauwerszee, Humsterland en de slenken, oude zeearmen die tot Ezinge reikten. Ze speelt in op het maaiseizoen en maakt van het gras monumentale weef sculpturen.
Suzanne Bernhardt en Philipp Kolmann onderzoeken de smaken van de aarde. Met behulp van eeuwenoude lokale grassen en traditionele voedselproductie technieken uit verschillende delen van de wereld gaan ze terug naar de basis van ons eten. Van de riet en de grassen uit de omgeving van Ezinge is er een Grass-bar met drankjes en hapjes gebaseerd op de grassenfamilie met toebehoren, zoals collectieve placemats.
Grasland Ezinge is een idee van kunstenaar Koos Buist. Met deze projecten werkt kunstruimte SIGN samen met hem.

More about the projects
The two projects by Trudy Oosterhuis and duo Suzanne Bernhardt & Philipp Kolmann are seasonal. During their preliminary research last year, the artists made many explorations in Ezinge and the surrounding area, which were accompanied by short residencies.
Results will combine in presentations and activities at Grasland this summer!
Suzanne Bernhardt and Philipp Kolmann investigate the flavors of the earth. Using age-old local grasses and traditional food production techniques from different parts of the world, they go back to the basics of our food. From the reeds and grasses from the Ezinge area, there is a Grass bar with drinks and snacks based on the grass family with accessories, such as collective placemats.
Trudy Oosterhuis is concerned with old-fashioned agricultural farming methods and makes a connection between land cultivation, plant materials and geographical history. Oosterhuis connects with the old landscape from the 8 and 9th centuries; Lauwerszee, Humsterland and the rifts, old sea arms that reached as far as Ezinge. She responds to the mowing season and turns the grass into monumental weaving sculptures.
Grasland Ezinge is an idea by artist Koos Buist. Art space SIGN collaborates with him on these projects.

Hoera! SIGN ontvangt voor de komende vier jaar Kunstpodium Basis van het Mondriaan Fonds. Kunstpodium Basis is voor professionele hedendaagse beeldende kunstinstellingen met een relevant artistiek-inhoudelijk programma.
SIGN is zeer blij met deze waardering en zal met veel plezier en aandacht haar programma voortzetten in eigen ruimte, op locatie en in de openbare ruimte met een levendig, experimenteel, interdisciplinair programma voor jonge professionele kunstenaars. Er zullen presentaties in vele vormen en contexten zijn. SIGN stimuleert daarbij de productie van nieuw werk en helpt jonge kunstenaars verder in hun ontwikkeling en het opbouwen van hun kunstpraktijk. Nieuw is het inzetten van co-curatoren bij specifieke projecten, en de extra activiteiten bij de 9 hoofdpresentaties per jaar, plus 1 buitenlandse presentatie + 1 externe residentie.
Centraal in de presentaties staat de verhouding van mens tot omgeving. Kunstenaars werken daarbij met actuele thema’s uit de samenleving, de naaste omgeving, en hun persoonlijke verhouding hiertoe. De programmalijnen zijn: identiteitsvorming, aftasten leefomgeving in verschillende werkelijkheidslagen, (rurale) interventies in publieke ruimte en op anders functionerende plekken, connecties met taal, voedsel, populaire cultuur en omgaan met de digitale wereld. Artistiek onderzoek van kunstenaars resulteert in goede presentaties voor publiek. Dit kenmerkt zich door diversiteit, experiment, van associatief, poëtisch tot sociaal-kritisch en documentair. Het wordt een avontuurlijke en rijke periode.
Het Mondriaan Fonds investeert in de periode 2025-2028 ruim € 38,5 miljoen in de meerjarige programma’s van 44 kunstpodia in Nederland en het Caribisch deel van het Koninkrijk. Het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden kent een rijk landschap van kunstpodia die samen de humuslaag van de beeldende kunst vormen. Talent vindt een plek, nieuw publiek wordt verwelkomd en kwaliteit krijgt een podium. Internationale ontdekkingen worden geïntroduceerd, innovaties gevierd en carrières gevormd. De kunstpodia staan aan de basis van het beeldende kunstveld en zijn onmisbaar voor een gezonde sector.
Vanaf 2025 wordt van organisaties verwacht dat ze fair pay gaan toepassen, want iedereen die werkt binnen de culturele sector hoort voldoende beloond te worden voor zijn inzet. Kunstpodia zijn echter vaak financieel kwetsbaar. Organisaties zijn meestal klein en begrotingen bescheiden. Om de sector meer toe te rusten voor fair pay is voor de komende beleidsplan periode extra budget vrijgemaakt door het ministerie van OCW. Het Mondriaan Fonds biedt kunstpodia hiermee een sterkere startpositie en de beeldende kunst een noodzakelijke extra ondersteuning.
Eelco van der Lingen, directeur bestuurder: “Met het oog op de toekomst is het fijn dat we zo’n mooie selectie kunstpodia, verspreid over het Koninkrijk, een goede basis kunnen bieden om prachtige programma’s te realiseren én fair pay toe te passen. Met deze ondersteuning hopen we niet alleen bij te kunnen dragen aan hoge kwaliteit en betere beloning, maar ook aan het vergroten van de aantrekkingskracht van een sector die dat verdient en die we nodig hebben.”

Samen met Koos Buist organiseert SIGN het project Grasland Ezinge. Sinds 1 september jl. verblijft de jonge Chinese kunstenaar Peng Zheng in Ezinge om Grasland a.h.w. artistiek te ontginnen. De eerste 2 weken van zijn residentie zitten erop. Hij heeft de omgeving verkent, heeft veel gefietst en hardgelopen. Zijn plan is als volgt: (zie poster) en je bent uitgenodigd om een bijdrage te leveren. Bereikbaar met auto, fiets of trein/bus of trein/fiets combinatie:)
Together with Koos Buist, SIGN organizes the Grasland Ezinge project. Since 1st of September, the young Chinese artist Peng Zheng has been staying in Ezinge to develop GRASLAND artistically, so to speak. The first 2 weeks of his residency are over. He explored the area, did a lot of cycling and running. His plan is as follows (see poster) and you are invited to take part with an contribution.
