An Evening of Presentations and Public Discussion on Art on a Communal Scale and Activism in relation to notions of the Commons.

“Art, Activism and the Commons” is a transdisciplinary conversation bringing together philosopher Thijs Lijster, curator Gemma Medina Estupiñan, artist Jeanne van Heeswijk, and ecologist Rick Middelbos to explore how art, theory, and ecology intersect in the creation of shared spaces, collective action, and new imaginaries of the common good.

Participants:

Thijs Lijster is Philosopher, theoretician and writer, assistant professor in philosophy of art and culture at the University of Groningen. He will address the concept of the ‘commons’, also in particular from a Dutch historic perspective, what it means and why it has become a particularly relevant concept today.
He will also share some examples and thoughts concerning ‘urban commons’ as spaces of ‘porosity’ where the intimate and the public meet.

Curator Gemma Medina Estupiñan is art Historian (PhD), independent researcher, educator and curator, co-curator of the Archive of Arte Útil and will talk about the notion of Arte Útil/Useful Art (art as a tool) and her work as co-curator of the archive of Arte Útil with Tania Bruguera. She will present her latest collaboration and curatorial work with artists Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson, on their ongoing community scale art projects exhibited at SIGN, The Rehabilitation of La Casa Invisible – Chapter 1 (Málaga) and The Right to Eindhoven – Circuit of Commons.

Jeanne van Heeswijk is visual artist and since 2025 artistic director at BAK Basecamp for Tactical Imaginaries in Utrecht. She will talk about her work to collectivize cultural infrastructure at BAK Basecamp and about her art practice that includes the creation of dynamic and diversified public spaces in order to “radicalise the local”. Her long-scale community-embedded projects question art’s autonomy by combining performative actions, discussions, and other forms of organizing and pedagogy in order to assist communities to take control of their futures.

Rick Middelbos is ecologist, biology teacher and nature representative. He will talk about his passion for nature and why among other we must give much more space and attention to nature in our urban environment and how we must follow its way and growth instead of wanting nature follow our rules and ways.

Een avond met presentaties en publieke discussie over kunst op gemeenschappelijke schaal en activisme in relatie tot de noties van de Commons.

“Kunst, Activisme en de Commons” is een transdisciplinair gesprek waarin filosoof Thijs Lijster, curator Gemma Medina Estupiñan, kunstenaar Jeanne van Heeswijk en ecoloog Rick Middelbos samenkomen om te onderzoeken hoe kunst, theorie en ecologie elkaar kruisen in het creëren van gedeelde ruimtes, collectieve actie en nieuwe verbeeldingen van het algemeen belang.

Deelnemers:
Thijs Lijster is filosoof, theoreticus, schrijver, en universitair docent filosofie van kunst en cultuur aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Hij zal het concept van de ‘commons’ bespreken, met name vanuit een Nederlands historisch perspectief, wat het betekent en waarom het vandaag de dag een bijzonder relevant concept is geworden.
Hij zal ook enkele voorbeelden en gedachten delen over ‘stedelijke commons’ als ruimtes van ‘porositeit’ waar het intieme en het publieke elkaar ontmoeten.

Curator Gemma Medina Estupiñan is kunsthistoricus (PhD), onafhankelijk onderzoeker, docent en curator, co-curator van het Archief van Arte Útil en zal spreken over het begrip Arte Útil/Nuttige Kunst (kunst als gereedschap) en haar werk als co-curator van het archief van Arte Útil met Tania Bruguera. Ze zal haar nieuwste samenwerking en curatoriële werk met kunstenaars Libia Castro en Ólafur Ólafsson presenteren, over hun lopende kunstprojecten op gemeenschapsniveau die tentoongesteld zijn bij SIGN, The Rehabilitation of La Casa Invisible – Chapter 1 (Málaga) en The Right to Eindhoven – Circuit of Commons.

Jeanne van Heeswijk is beeldend kunstenaar en sinds 2025 artistiek directeur van BAK Basecamp voor Tactical Imaginaries in Utrecht. Ze vertelt over haar werk om de culturele infrastructuur bij BAK Basecamp te collectiviseren en over haar kunstpraktijk, die onder meer bestaat uit het creëren van dynamische en gediversifieerde openbare ruimtes om “het lokale te radicaliseren”. Haar grootschalige, in de gemeenschap ingebedde projecten bevragen de autonomie van kunst door performatieve acties, discussies en andere vormen van organisatie en pedagogiek te combineren om gemeenschappen te helpen hun toekomst in eigen hand te nemen.

Rick Middelbos is ecoloog, biologiedocent en natuurvertegenwoordiger. Hij vertelt over zijn passie voor de natuur en waarom we onder andere veel meer ruimte en aandacht moeten geven aan de natuur in onze stedelijke omgeving en hoe we haar pad en groei moeten volgen in plaats van te willen dat de natuur onze regels en gebruiken volgt.
