Inbox/outpost is een site specifiek project. De tentoonstelling is proces georiënteerd en ontvouwt zich geleidelijk op twee locaties die voor een periode van zes weken nauw met elkaar in verbinding staan: SIGN in Groningen (Nederland) en een oude haringfabriek in Djúpavik (IJsland).
Een internationale groep van zes jonge kunstenaars doet zes weken lang intensief onderzoek naar de mogelijkheid van werken in situ, in en rondom de oude vervallen Haringfabriek in Djúpavik; een afgelegen plek in het noorden van IJsland, de uiterste periferie van Europa. Het ruige landschap, de nabijheid van de zee en de rauwe industriële architectuur met haar vervallen machinekamers en watertanks, geven de locatie een uniek karakter en bieden een uitdagende context voor kunstprojecten.
Werken in Djúpavik confronteert de kunstenaars tijdens hun residentie met extreme werkomstandigheden. De dichtstbijzijnde winkel, bijvoorbeeld, is 40 kilometer verderop en verkoopt alleen het hoogst noodzakelijke. Het materiaal dat ter plekke beschikbaar is, is schaars en heeft een dwingend karakter.
Het uiteindelijke werk zal een uitkomst zijn van een voortdurende dialoog tussen kunstenaars en hun fysieke omgeving en kunstenaars onderling.
Na de werkperiode (4 mei t/m 7 juni) zullen de resultaten worden tentoongesteld in de oude haringfabriek van 7 juni t/m15 juli, welke open zal zijn voor publiek met een opening op 7 juni 15.00 uur.
De registratie en documentatie van hun onderzoek zal met grote regelmaat (bijna iedere dag), verspreid over de zes weken, worden verstuurd naar de parallelle projectruimte in SIGN (Groningen). Hierbij wordt gebruik gemaakt van uiteenlopende communicatiekanalen als fax, telefoon, luchtpost, zeepost, 'flessenpost' en in beperkte mate internet (inbelverbinding). Deze documenten kunnen iedere vorm aannemen: geluidsfragment, video, fotoreportage, tekst, tekening, object etc. In SIGN brengt kunstenaar en curator/verbinder/archivaris Danielle van Zuijlen de informatiestroom op associatieve en speculatieve wijze in kaart in een voortdurend veranderende tentoonstelling. Zij organiseert en interpreteert de documentatie en koppelt terug met vragen, opmerkingen en opdrachten.
Vanuit het documentatie/communicatiecentrum wordt steeds gezocht naar een passende inhoud voor de tentoonstelling en de website (http://www.inboxoutpost.in). Bij Sign en op de site kunnen de vorderingen van de kunstenaars in IJsland door iedereen gevolgd worden en kan men een fysieke of digitale boodschap achterlaten (inboxoutpost@gmail.com). Reacties kunnen worden teruggespeeld via het documentatiecentrum naar de kunstenaars. Dit centrum in Sign/Groningen biedt een exclusief inzicht in een proces dat zich 2000 kilometer verderop afspeelt.
Het uitgangspunt voor de parallelle expositie en dus voor Danielle van Zuijlen en de kunstenaars is de vraag: Wat is de status van documentatie?Hoe verhoudt de documentatie zich tot het werk?Hoe vertaal je een dergelijk proces en maak je het inzichtelijk in een tentoonstelling die een eigen bestaansrecht heeft, zonder de fysieke aanwezigheid van de kunstwerken?
Inbox/outpost problematiseert de vanzelfsprekendheid waarmee kunstenaarsdocumentatie tentoon wordt gesteld. Geijkte ‘formats’, zoals de foto- of videoreportage en de publicatie, worden opnieuw bevraagd en getest in een dynamische nieuwe manier van tentoonstellen.
De satelliettentoonstelling in SIGN duurt van 12 mei tot en met 14 juni.

Inbox/Outpost is a site-specific and process-oriented project that gradually evolves on two locations: an out of use herring factory in Djúpavík in the very North of Iceland and in SIGN, a project space in Groningen, the Netherlands. Both locations will be closely connected for a period of six weeks, during which an international group of six young artists will explore the ecological, architectural, social and cultural environment of the factory.Their research will be an investigation into a possible work in situ; a work that is inextricably bound up with the specific situation in an outpost in the very North of Iceland with its vast and almost impenetrable nature, near the sea. The spacious building of the herring factory with its dysfunctional machine-rooms is an inspiring industrial heritage. All this provides a challenging context for artists working in situ in all kinds of media.
Working in Djúpavík means putting up with extreme conditions: the nearest shop, selling only the very basics, is half an hour by car and the material on site is not inexhaustible.
The eventual work will be a product of an ongoing dialogue between artists and between artists and the environment.
After the working period the results will be exhibited from the 7th of June till 15th of July 2009 in the herring factory in Djúpavik and will be open for public. You’re welcome at the opening on Saturday the 7th of June at 15.00h.
The artists will select and send the documentation of their research to a documentation centre that has been set up in SIGN. Throughout the research period the artists will regularly supply the centre with documentation of their research (packages, letters, mails, voicemails, audio and videotapes, drawings etc.) making use of all possible means of communication (air mail, telephone, fax machine, and restricted use of internet etc.).
A multitude of documents will slowly accumulate in SIGN, where curator, archivist, communicator Danielle van Zuijlen will associatively and speculatively process and map the information in an exhibition that is constantly open to change and revision depending on the nature of the incoming material. The curator will send the artists in Djúpavík feedback, questions and assignments, thus establishing a dialogue that will influence both the process of curating as the documentation of the research on site.
At SIGN’s and on the website (www.inboxoutpost.in) visitors will have the opportunity to keep track of the artists’ proceedings in Iceland and they can leave a message in real or digital form (inboxoutpost@gmail.com). Through the documentation centre messages can be sent to the artists. This satellite-exhibition in SIGN gives insight in both a working-process and a situation 2000 kilometres away.
In selecting and mapping the documentation curator Danielle van Zuijlen and artists will try to formulate an answer to several questions concerning the status of documentation, the relationship between documentation and work and the relationship between the work and the research that precedes it. In which way does this transmission, translation take shape and how does it manifest itself in a dynamic, interesting exhibition, without the physical presence of the works?
Inbox/Outpost centres on the dialogue between curator and artist. In this dialogue it questions the ease with which artist documentation is exhibited. Standing formats and procedures, like the photo- and video-reportage, will be tested and revised while possible alternatives will be developed.
