Vanaf midden augustus is het weer tijd voor een grote zomerresidentie bij Sign! Het oosten van de stad Groningen, een gebied in transitie met half urbane, rurale, industriële plekken, is het decor voor WEARABLES. We verwelkomen kunstenaars Aura Rendón Benger, Jos Jacob & Nina Iggy, Rowan van As, Smila Zinecker en Cleo Veldman voor een werkperiode in Sign, Y2 en Moshpit of Creation, met aansluitend presentaties en publieke momenten.

Wearables is een project over textiel, props, kleding, kostuums, gezien als lichaamsextenties en sociale handreikingen naar het maatschappelijk gebeuren. Voor de kunstenaars hebben de creaties iets te verkondigen en worden ze ingezet als uitgesproken communicatiemiddel, ook in de openbare ruimte. Performen, deelnemen aan het openbare leven, interveniëren, ‘kritisch advertisement-achtige zaken’ kunnen daarbij aan de orde komen. Bij Wearables is het sociale aspect voelbaar – het heeft een sterke performatieve ruimtelijke link, waarbij het karakter van een plek beïnvloed wordt.

From mid-August it’s time again for a big summer residence at Sign! The east of the city of Groningen, an area in transition with semi-urban, rural and industrial places, is the setting for WEARABLES. We welcome artists Aura Rendón Benger, Jos Jacob & Nina Iggy, Rowan van As, Smila Zinecker and Cleo Veldman for a working period in Sign, Y2 and Moshpit of Creation, followed by presentations and public moments.

‘Wearables’ is a project about textiles, props, clothing, suits, objects, seen as body extensions and social aids to social fringe events.
They have a message in them. From the artist’s point of view, the creations have something to announce and they are used as an explicit means of communication, also in public space. Performing, participating in public life, intervening, ‘critical advertisement-like matters’ can be discussed. With ‘Wearables’ the social aspect is tangible, it has a strong performative spatial link, in which the character of a place is influenced.

Over de kunstenaars

Aura Rendón Benger maakt monumentaal textiel en verwijst naar huid, lichaamsdelen en intimiteit. Ze brengt de toeschouwers het werk en zichzelf op een actieve manier bij elkaar. Dat komt doordat Rendón Benger vaak zelf als performer, al dan niet zichtbaar, in de installatie aanwezig is. Tijdens Wearables maakt de kunstenaar een nieuwe interactieve sculptuur/installatie van textiel.

Jos Jacob & Nina Iggy werken in SIGN aan hun installatie/performance MORI, waarin de eindigheid van de mens en de oneindige cyclus van het leven wordt verbeeld. Installatie, kostuum en fysiologie werken samen als één geheel. Eerdere fases in de ontwikkeling van MORI werden en worden gepresenteerd bij samenwerkingspartners WORM en Welcome to the Village. In SIGN volgt in september de 3e fase!

In het werk van Rowan van As komt het sculpturale en het performatieve samen. Zijn ‘materiaal’ haalt hij uit de populaire cultuur en hij geeft daar commentaar op. Zijn objecten vormen de basis voor een actie en verraden een primitief soort interactiviteit. Door fenomenen met elkaar in onlogisch verband samen te brengen ontstaat een nieuwe betekenis. De vele kleine industriële bedrijfjes rondom Moshpit of Creation zullen hem zeker inspireren.

Smila Zinecker onderzoekt in steden en openbare ruimtes hoe verhalen kunnen ontstaan door middel van diverse dynamische processen. Daarbij richt zij zich op verschillende soorten stedelijke ontwikkeling die voortkomen uit kapitalistische structuren en commerciële systemen. Tijdens de werkperiode in Y2 onderzoekt Smila de archetypes van de stad Groningen, welke de basis voor nieuw werk zal vormen.

Cleo Veldman maakt graag nieuwe menselijke vormen door middel van vervormde interacties, gebaseerd op de relatie mainstream en de buitenstaanders. Veldman maakt maskers die haarzelf en andere mensen in karakters veranderen. Door dit te doen, onderzoekt ze hoe ze persoonlijke en interpersoonlijke grenzen kan verleggen. Voor de werkperiode is Veldman van plan, binnen de ruimte van Y2, een tv-show te maken met kostuums en karakters.

About the artists

Aura Rendón Benger makes monumental textiles and refers to skin, body parts and intimacy. She actively brings the spectators, the work and herself together. This is because Rendón Benger herself is often present as a performer, visible or not, in the installation. During Wearables, the artist creates a new interactive sculpture/installation of textiles.

Jos Jacob & Nina Iggy are working in SIGN on their installation/ performance MORI, which depicts the finiteness of humans and the infinite cycle of life. Installation, costume and physiology work together as one. Earlier phases in the development of MORI were presented at cooperation partners WORM and Welcome to the Village. The 3rd phase will follow in SIGN in September!

The sculptural and the performative come together in Rowan van As‘s work. He takes his ‘material’ from popular culture and comments on it. His objects form the basis for an action and betray a primitive kind of interactivity. Bringing phenomena together in an illogical connection creates a new meaning. The many small industrial companies around Moshpit of Creation will certainly inspire him.

Smila Zinecker investigates in cities and public spaces how stories can arise through various dynamic processes. In doing so, she focuses on different types of urban development that arise from capitalist structures and commercial systems. During the work period in Y2, Smila investigates the archetypes of the city of Groningen, which will form the basis for new work.

Cleo Veldman likes to create new human forms through distorted interactions, based on the relationship mainstream and the outsiders. Veldman makes masks that turn herself and other people into characters. In doing so, she explores how to push personal and interpersonal boundaries. For the work period, Veldman plans to make a TV show with costumes and characters within Y2’s space.
