SPREAD Zinefest een samenwerking van Groningse kunstpodia SIGN en het resort, is ontstaan uit een gedeelde interesse voor DIY maakcultuur en de behoefte aan tegendraadse initiatieven. Dit jaar sluit ARTisBOOK zich aan. Zie ook http://spreadzinefest.nl/

SIGN en het resort organiseerden eerder SPREAD zinefest in 2016 en 2018 met groeiend bereik en netwerk www.spreadzinefest.nl
Voor editie 2021 liggen de locaties dicht bij elkaar. Het resort betrekt een tijdelijke plek aan de Meeuwerderweg 58. SIGN ligt aan de Winschoterkade 10. Bij deze editie sluit ARTisBOOK zich aan, Westerhavenstraat 14.
Voor de internationale connecties wordt er samengewerkt met de Baskische curator Laura Diez Carcia van Colectivo ANT-espacio http://antespacio.com/ in Bilbao. En Rob Strick scout, internationale zinekenner en collectioneur. De grafische vormgeving wordt verzorgd door Floor van Meeuwen (thans student post academie PZI Experimental Publishing, Roterdam) .
Een en ander vindt plaats in de vormgeving van een zinedisplayer van Milan Hoezen, die gericht is op de communicatie van zines zelf en de makers met de bezoeker.

SPREAD zinefest is een terugkerend festival dat zich focust op self-published art; booklets, zines en prints en vindt nu plaats op 3 nabije locaties in de stad Groningen en in de publieke ruimte. Naast het tonen en maken wordt de zinevorm ook als communicatie middel ingezet ten bate van de individuele (of groeps) stem (die hoe dan ook een persoonlijk stem is) Met als doel om diverse groepen, communities, clubs, publieken en makers te bereiken, met elkaar in contact te brengen om tot ontmoetingen en uitwisseling te komen. Ook worden er livestream vooral met buitenlandse connecties en radiouitzendingen ingezet om SPREAD nog meer uit te dragen.

De visie van SPREAD verwoord door Laura Diez Carcia (curator buitenlandse bijdrages SPREAD): ” Zelf uitgeven en meer specifiek het uitgeven van fanzines komt als fenomeen aan de oppervlakte en is verbonden met de tegencultuur. Dat komt voort uit de behoefte om vrij te zijn van zowel professionele als amateuristische standaarden. In een wereld waarin de plekken voor het uitproberen en het regelloze spel dreigen te verdwijnen, staat de fanzine met een meer intuïtieve taal open voor het spel, voor linguïstiek, culturele uitwisseling, het gebruik van fotografie, illustraties; alles om andere narratieven te genereren zonder vastgestelde richtlijnen.
Zelf uitgeven opent de mogelijkheid om zonder filters te publiceren wat je interesseert en daarmee nauw verbonden is met het ontwikkelen van krachtig naar buiten treden. Een vrijplaats dat de gaten opvult die de mainstream cultuur laat vallen, een plek om stem te geven aan die geluiden die niet te vinden zijn in de media en de reguliere publicaties. Van de neteligheid van onbetaald werk, van een onbaatzuchtige maar politieke stellingname, een plek van verzet is geschapen dat ons uitnodigt te reflecteren, voort te gaan en ter discussie te stellen.”

Doel van het SPREAD is aandacht geven aan zines en derivaten als specifieke communicatie vorm, ‘low key’ om de eigenzinnige, geëngageerde, kritische, tegendraadse ‘stem’ te laten horen en zien: als beeldende alternatieve, vrije meer individuele vorm van expressie. Dit geldt zowel nationaal als internationele uitingen uit bv. periferieën, geïsoleerde gemeenschappen, brandhaarden versus vrijere plekken en alle nuances daartussen. Nieuwe werken, nieuwe ideeen en acties ontstaan ook mbt nieuwe verspreidingsmethodes.
Belangrijk is ontmoeten, uitwisseling en kennisoverdracht; groepen, organisates, makers / kunstenaars, individuen worden samengebracht zodat geinteresseerden een mix aan zines ontdekken van allerlei gemeenschappen, gebieden met diverse invalshoeken en condities. Uitwisseling van kennis en ervaring en netwerkvorming van internationale, Nederlandse en regionale makers en geïnteresseerden is aan de orde. Hoe laat je je stem horen onder wisselende omstandigheden? Vormgeving, programma onderdelen zijn op het communicatieve concept gericht.
Daarbij worden ook de doelgroepen passend bij de geegageerde onderwerpen benaderd om mee te doen met de workshops, lezingen of verspreiding.
In 10 dagen wordt (samen)maken, verspreiden en het communicatieve belang van self publishing, handmade DIY zinevormen onder de aandacht gebracht. Dit dmv. een zinemarkt, zine presentaties/bibliotheek, workshops, bijeenkomsten, lezingen, events, interventies in openbare ruimte, distributie activiteiten, incl. digitale pendanten.
SPREAD creeert de gelegenheid waarin anti-hiërarchisch en onafhankelijk werk wordt gemaakt en getoond. Ook uitwisseling van kennis en ervaring is daarbij een belangrijke factor. Om daarmee het belang van een eigen stem te onderstrepen en kenbaar te maken, dat dit op onconventionele manieren kan worden geuit en verspreid.

SPREAD onderzoekt inhoud,vorm en distributie van zines en laat makers vanuit Nederland en perifere gebieden en gemeenschappen uit het buitenland samen komen waarbij verbinding, experiment, inspiratie en nieuwe ideeen en werken ontstaan. SPREAD focust op zines als communicatie vorm, op nationale en internationale zine netwerken en vergelijkt elkaars uitingen en producten, inclusief omstandigheden.
Zines laten de ‘stem’ horen, vanuit artistiek perspectief, als individu, kleine groep of initiatief. Dat kan een geëngageerde stem zijn, een kritische, activistische of tegendraadse. Het is een alternatieve en vrije vorm van expressie. Vandaar dat we ook makers, kenners en gemeenschappen voor een bijdrage uitnodigen afkomstig uit perifere gebieden als Baskenland, Hongkong, Mexico of feministische groepen waarin ongelijkheid, censorchip of onderdrukking door overheden de mogelijkheden je te uiten beperken. Zo ook geisoleerdheid, equality empowerment’ en identiteitsvraagstukken.
Hoe lost men in verschillende delen van de wereld dit op, ook op minder democratische plekken? Hoe doen zij dat, hoe manifesteert zich dat, hoe verspreiden zij dit? Zowel hier als elders?

Bij SIGN zal deze focus liggen op internationale nieuwe zines en zine-gemeenschappen en printvormen waarbij men zijn stem laat horen. Direct vanuit de individuele kunstenaar of groep.
Voor deze ’library/ presentatie’ heeft SIGN de medewerking gevraagd van mede curator Laura Diez Carcia en mede /scouting, research: Rob Strick. Met name voor de buitenlandse connecties en vooral in het onderzoek naar de zinevormen bij dergelijke gemeenschappen en plekken. Ook workshops en lezingen zijn aan dit gegeven gekoppeld.

Het resort wil de focus leggen op manier van presenteren, netwerken, vormonderzoek en initiatieven betrekken die raakvlakken hebben met zines of deze maken, zoals bepaalde clubs, kleine onafhankelijke uitgeverijen. Verder is er een grote 2 daagse zinemarkt.

ARTisBOOK beziet het vanuit een historische lijn: tonen van kunstenaarstijdschriften uit de periode van 1970-1995. Rond 1970 ontstond bij veel kunstenaars de behoefte om naast bestaande kunstinstellingen een eigen platform te creëren waar discussie en het uitwisselen van ideeën mogelijk was. In de loop van de ‘70 en ‘80 jaren werden overal in Nederland kunstenaarsinitiatieven opgericht, zoals De Enschedese School en Drukwerk De Zaak in Groningen. Vanuit een vergelijkbare mentaliteit ontstonden ook de kunstenaarstijdschriften. Kunstenaars wilden zelf een discours ontwikkelen over hun werk. Het lijkt mooi om dit historisch perspectief binnen de huidige ontwikkelingen te plaatsen. Daarnaast presenteren ze het Gronings kunstcollectief Knetterijs en Homescreen. Tijdens de manifestatie zullen zij, die de zine als medium hebben onderzocht, worden uitgenodigd voor een gesprek in ARTisBOOK waarin kritische reflectie op de historische presentatie, maar ook op hun individuele praktijken, keuzes, manieren van werken, samenwerken en creëren aan de orde zullen komen. SPREAD Zinefest, a collaboration between Groningen art venues SIGN and the resort, arose from a shared interest in DIY creative culture and the need for unconventional initiatives. This year ARTisBOOK is joining.

This stems from the need to be free from both professional and amateur standards. In a world where the places for trial and error are in danger of disappearing, the fanzine with a more intuitive language is open to the game, to linguistics, cultural exchange, the use of photography, illustrations; anything to generate other narratives without set guidelines.
Self-publishing opens up the possibility of publishing without filters what interests you and is therefore closely linked to developing strong publicity. A sanctuary that fills the gaps left by mainstream culture, a place to give voice to those voices that cannot be found in the media and mainstream publications. From the thorns of unpaid work, from a selfless but political stance, a place of resistance has been created that invites us to reflect, to move forward and to question.”
The aim of SPREAD is to pay attention to zines and derivatives as a specific form of communication, ‘low key’ to show and hear the idiosyncratic, committed, critical, contrarian ‘voice’: as a visual alternative, free, more individual form of expression. This applies to both national and international expressions from eg peripheries, isolated communities, hot spots versus freer places and all the nuances in between. New works, new ideas and actions also arise with regard to new dissemination methods.
It is important to meet, exchange and transfer knowledge; groups, organizations, makers / artists, individuals are brought together so that interested parties discover a mix of zines from all kinds of communities, areas with different perspectives and conditions. Exchange of knowledge and experience and networking of international, Dutch and regional makers and interested parties is on the agenda. How do you make your voice heard under varying circumstances? Design, program components are focused on the communicative concept.
In addition, the target groups appropriate to the subjects involved are approached to participate in the workshops, lectures or dissemination.
In 10 days, the making, distribution and communicative importance of self publishing, handmade DIY zine forms will be highlighted. This by means of a zine market, zine presentations/library, workshops, meetings, lectures, events, interventions in public space, distribution activities, incl. digital counterparts.
SPREAD creates the opportunity for creating and displaying anti-hierarchical and independent work. The exchange of knowledge and experience is also an important factor. To underline the importance of having your own voice and to make it known that it can be expressed and disseminated in unconventional ways.
SPREAD investigates content, form and distribution of zines and allows makers from the Netherlands and peripheral areas and communities from abroad to come together, creating connection, experiment, inspiration and new ideas and works. SPREAD focuses on zines as a form of communication, on national and international zine networks and compares each other’s expressions and products, including circumstances.
Zines let the ‘voice’ be heard, from an artistic perspective, as an individual, small group or initiative. That can be a committed voice, a critical, activist or contrarian voice. It is an alternative and free form of expression. That is why we also invite makers, experts and communities to contribute from peripheral areas such as the Basque Country, Hong Kong, Mexico or feminist groups in which inequality, censorship or oppression by governments limit the possibilities of expression. This also applies to isolation, equality empowerment and identity issues.
How can people solve this problem in different parts of the world, even in less democratic places? How do they do that, how does that manifest, how do they spread this? Both here and elsewhere?

At SIGN, this focus will be on international new zines and zine communities and print formats that make their voice heard. Directly from the individual artist or group.
For this ‘library display’ SIGN has requested the cooperation of co-curator Laura Diez Carcia and co-scouting, research: Rob Strick. Especially for the foreign connections and especially in the research into the zine forms in such communities and places. Workshops and lectures are also linked to this fact.
The resort wants to focus on presentation, networking, form research and involve initiatives that interface with or make zines, such as certain clubs, small independent publishers. There is also a large 2 day zine market.

ARTisBOOK sees it from a historical perspective: showing artists’ magazines from the period 1970-1995. Around 1970, many artists felt the need to create their own platform alongside existing art institutions where discussion and the exchange of ideas was possible. In the course of the 1970s and 1980s, artists’ initiatives were established all over the Netherlands, such as De Enschedese School and Drukwerk De Zaak in Groningen. Artist’s magazines arose from a similar mentality. Artists wanted to develop their own discourse about their work. It seems nice to place this historical perspective within current developments. In addition, they present the Groningen art collective Knetterijs en Homescreen. During the manifestation, those who have explored the zine as a medium will be invited for a conversation in ARTisBOOK in which critical reflection on the historical presentation, but also on their individual practices, choices, ways of working, collaboration and creation will be discussed.
