Linda Stauffer & Anne Schmidt, Caz Egelie en Broken Toaster Records maken in de werkperiode sterk visuele settingen, verhaallijnen en actieve installaties volgepropt met prikkelende decorstukken, attributen, kostuums etc. waarbij gespeeld wordt met verwachtingen. In maart vullen deze ‘stages’ zich met interacties, performances, gigs, video’s en streams, uitgevoerd door de kunstenaars zelf en zij nodigen ook anderen uit een rol te vervullen. De aard en het uiterlijk van PROPS (en dus ook het publiek) wordt gestuurd door corona- omstandigheden.
Over de kunstenaars
Linda Stauffer (Zwitserland, 1990) maakt marionetten (met namen als “Octopus, Heks, Clitoris”) met fluïde, agender karakters. Zij komen tot leven door performers en bezoekers met het werk Appendages. Stauffer combineert verschillende technieken en methodes zoals houtsnijwerk, video en poppenspel met fictieve, humoristische vertellingen om de binaire scheiding van seksen en normatieve genderrollen op te lossen. Op speelse wijze worden verhalen ontwikkeld samen met Anne Schmidt (Duitsland, 1991), die de mogelijkheid geven om te gaan met misrepresentaties. Samen maken zij een meerlaags poppenhuis waarin ook optredens via zoom gaan plaatsvinden. Stauffer studeerde in 2020 af aan het Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam. Zij woont en werkt in Amsterdam en Zwitserland. Schmidt studeert aan de Academy of Fine Arts in Wenen en zij woont en werkt aldaar. Linda en Anne worden tijdens de werkperiode ondersteund door onze reflectant Nina Wijnmaalen.

“ECHO – Play in a Maquette”
Als onderdeel van de tentoonstelling PROPS presenteerden Linda Stauffer en Anne Schmidt de online performance ECHO – Play in a Maquette via Zoom op zondag 14 februari 2021 tussen 16.00 en 17.30 uur. vanuit SIGN. Voor ECHO maakten Stauffer en Schmidt een meerlaags decor voor een theatervoorstelling met poppen in vijf scènes. De voorstelling was doorlopend, live, in een loop van ca. 20 minuten,.
Group/Set/Ring/Crowd/Band/Crew/Bunch/Gang van Broken Toaster Records vindt plaats in een ‘coronaproof’ setting waarbij verwoede pogingen worden gedaan om interacties te bewerkstelligen tussen performers en publiek, ondanks alle obstakels. Broken Toaster Records is een zelfvoorzienend recordlabel, bestaande uit kunstenaars Kasper van Moll (Nijmegen, 1992), Ide André (Ede, 1990) en Jelle Slof (Zevenhoven, 1990), allen afgestudeerd aan Artez Arnhem in 2016. Het label richt zich op het oprichten, uitvoeren en opnemen van zeer tijdelijke bands. Elke band bestaat maar één dag en doet maar één show. De bands die uit Broken Toaster Records voortkomen, uiten zich in niet-alledaagse optredens: podiums kapot zagen, overnachten in een concert venue of het aanleggen van voetbalvelden. In SIGN hebben zij een tweelaags coronaproof podium gebouwd die nieuwe verhoudingen schept tussen toeschouwer en performers. Broken Toaster Records nodigen de volgende acts uit in SIGN om te komen optreden: LosDQ, Harmjan Roeles, OGCOLTRANE en Lyckle, Kim & Gijsje. Tijdens de werkperiode wordt Broken Toaster Records ondersteund door onze reflectant Frank Koolen.
De installatie I loved calling it a rat race, a tribute show to Janet, the Artist van Caz Egelie (1994) houdt het midden tussen retrospectief en een podium. Het is een eerbetoon, een afscheid van The Artist (Janet) als publiek figuur, een overzichtstentoonstelling met attributen, props, kostuums, video, films en ‘tribute acts’. Egelie heeft in SIGN een reeks van coulissen gemaakt, waar kostuums en kostuumarchieven, props en attributen te zien zijn die het verhaal van The Artist vertellen. De musicalster neemt afscheid op de meest overdadige, bombastische manier. Het karakter is gebaseerd op de rol Janet van der Graaf uit de musical The Drowsey Chaperone. Op 28 Maart komt Andy Smart een tribute live performance uitvoeren. Hij weet popcultuur en film romantiek te bevragen en gaat in op elementen van de ‘show’. Egelie maakt sculpturen, performances en 3D-animaties. In zijn omvangrijke, multidisciplinaire oeuvre verwijst Egelie naar kunsthistorische referenties en verwijzen werken weer naar elkaar. De kunstenaar studeerde in 2018 af aan HKU, Utrecht en woont en werkt in Utrecht.
De expositie is na de lockdown te bezoeken van 3 t/m 27 maart 2021

Na de lockdown hopen we de optredens en performances in de door de kunstenaars gemaakte podia en stages te presenteren. Gaan de optredens live niet lukken, dan vinden alleen live streams plaats vanuit SIGN. Houd voor het laatste nieuws hierover onze berichtgeving via website en social media in de gaten.
SIGN houdt rekening met de voorschriften en richtlijnen van RIVM en de regering m.b.t. corona. Wanneer de strenge lockdown voorbij is, is er een deurbeleid: houd 1,5 meter afstand, draag een mondkapje en blijf bij ziekte thuis. Het maximaal aantal mensen dat tegelijkertijd in SIGN mag zijn wordt later bekend gemaakt.

Linda Stauffer & Anne Schmidt, Caz Egelie and Broken Toaster Records make strong visual settings, storylines and active installations during the work period, stuffed with stimulating set pieces, attributes, costumes, etc., playing with expectations. In March, these “stages” will be filled with interactions, performances, gigs, videos and streams performed by the artists themselves and inviting others to take part as well. The nature and appearance of PROPS (and therefore also the audience) is driven by corona conditions.
About the artists
Linda Stauffer (Switzerland, 1990) makes puppets (with names like “Octopus, Witch, Clitoris”) with fluid, agender characters. They come to life through performers and visitors with the work Appendages. Stauffer combines different techniques and methods such as woodcarving, video and puppetry with fictional, humorous narratives to resolve the binary separation of sexes and normative gender roles. In a playful way, stories are developed together with Anne Schmidt (Germany, 1991), which provide the opportunity to deal with misrepresentations. Together they make a multi-layer dollhouse in which performances will also take place via Zoom. Stauffer graduated from the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam in 2020. She lives and works in Amsterdam and Switzerland. Schmidt studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and she lives and works there. Linda and Anne are supported during the work period by our reflectant Nina Wijnmaalen.
Broken Toaster Records’ Group / Set / Ring / Crowd / Band / Crew / Bunch / Gang takes place in a “corona proof” setting where efforts are made to create interactions between performers and audience, despite all obstacles. Broken Toaster Records is a self-sufficient record label, consisting of artists Kasper van Moll (Nijmegen, 1992), Ide André (Ede, 1990) and Jelle Slof (Zevenhoven, 1990), all graduated from Artez Arnhem in 2016. The label focuses on setting up and performing with very temporary bands. Each band only exists for one day and only does one show. The bands that emerge from Broken Toaster Records express themselves in unusual performances: sawing stages broken, spending the night in a concert venue or building football fields. In SIGN they have built a two-layer corona-proof stage that creates new relationships between spectator and performers. Broken Toaster Records invite the following acts to come and perform in SIGN: LosDQ, Harmjan Roeles, OGCOLTRANE and Lyckle, Kim & Gijsje. During the work period Broken Toaster Records is supported by our reflectant Frank Koolen.
The installation ‘I loved calling it a rat race, a tribute show to Janet, the Artist’ by Caz Egelie (1994) is a cross between retrospective and a stage. It is a tribute, a farewell to The Artist (Janet) as a public figure, a retrospective exhibition with attributes, props, costumes, video, films and “tribute acts”. Egelie has created a series of wings in SIGN, showing costumes and costume archives, props and attributes that tell the story of The Artist. The musical star says goodbye in the most lavish, bombastic way. The character is based on the role Janet van der Graaf from the musical The Drowsey Chaperone. Andy Smart will also perform live in SIGN in a tribute toJanet van der Graaf on 28 March. He knows how to question pop culture and film romance and examines elements of the ‘show’. Egelie makes sculptures, performances and 3D animations. In his extensive, multidisciplinary oeuvre, Egelie refers to art-historical references and works refer to each other. The artist graduated from HKU, Utrecht in 2018 and lives and works in Utrecht.

SIGN takes into account the regulations and guidelines of RIVM and the government with regard to corona. When the strict lockdown is over, there is a door policy: keep a distance of 1.5 meters, wear a mouth mask and stay home in case of illness. The maximum number of people allowed to be in SIGN at the same time will be announced later.
