PaperCuts toont visualisaties van taal, schrift, communicatie en codes in relatie tot identiteit en houding. Met performances, installaties, schilderijen, pamfletten en andere media presenteren Oliver Doe, Ra’fat Ali, Mariana Jurado Rico, Alice Slyngstad hun ideeën.

Alice Slyngstad (1990, NO) onderzoekt performance als medium, methode en zienswijze. Diens werk weeft zich door lagen van verschillende publieks vormen, met perspectieven die bevragen: wie of wat treedt er op voor wie? Schrijven en tekst staan centraal, evenals het vraagstuk welke performatieve rol spelen elementen als licht, geluid, ruimte, schermen ed. in de ruimte. Proces, praktijk en presentaties worden gekenmerkt door het onderzoeken van taal, stemmen en verhalen. Voor PaperCuts presenteert Alice het werk “Goodie Bags”, dat is gebaseerd op een tekst waarin fysiek leren wordt onderzocht via interfaces die goederen, seksueel verlangen of informatie verspreiden. Het werk traceert gevoeligheden en herinneringen uit de privésfeer naar een openbare, onderling verbonden omgeving.
De verzameling van informatie, lichamen en verlangens wordt in Goodie Bags detritus, als het ware een afgeschudde huid, gesystematiseerd en geanimeerd door het bijeenbrengen. De aandacht verschuift voortdurend tussen micro en macro, voortdurend op zoek naar hiaten, gaten en ruimtes om in te passen. De communicatie vindt plaats via de installatie, tussen oppositie schermen die de kijker tussen het materiaal plaatsen

Globalisering en diaspora maken het opbouwen van een individuele identiteit voor Ra’fat Ali (1991, SY) een complexe strijd, een verschil tussen wat hem eigen is en wat niet. Middels technologie en taal creëert hij begrip voor een hybride identiteit, en wat je kan kwijtraken; dromen, beelden, plaatsen en woorden worden achtergelaten. In zijn installatie speelt hij met de beschrijvende functie van het woord en het beeld door hun rollen om te wisselen. Voor PaperCuts zal hij een virtuele 3D-omgeving maken waarin een ‘heelheid’ gecreëerd wordt door een orthografische camera te gebruiken. Ra’fat werkt aan een installatie, opgezet in het Groningse landschap, die het ‘vacuüm’ van zijn hybride identiteit visueel weergeeft. Het filmische resultaat hiervan wordt verwerkt in de opstelling in SIGN.
Mariana Jurado Rico (1991, CO) schept omstandigheden voor fusie tussen mensen. Haar werk wordt deels gevormd door het woord NO: als beeld, een symbool, een vibe, als een stemming. Het gaat over falen als motto, een instrument van verzet, een manier van leven. Tijdens Papercuts presenteert ze het werk ‘I would prefer not to: we want to fail.’, een combinatie van eerdere onderzoeken naar het woord ‘NO’ en een mogelijkheid tot dialoog met de omgeving waarin de bezoeker inbreng heeft in de omgang met de visuele uitingen van het woord. In de workshop die ze geeft tijdens de opening van PaperCuts, kun je je verwachtingen van succes loslaten. Haar pamfletten met grafische risoprint, zullen door de stad heen te vinden zijn.

Het werk van Oliver Doe (1994, UK) beschouwt de veranderlijkheid van queer identiteiten vooral vanuit een taalkundig standpunt. Hen onderzoekt queer communicatie via verschillende niveaus van codering en abstractie, waarbij het visuele aspect van teksten wordt gecombineerd met performatieve en beschrijvende zaken en betekenissen. In SIGN presenteert Oliver een selectie van schilderijen, gecombineerd met nieuwe, op tekst gebaseerde werken en performances. Ook maakt hen pamfletten met prikkelende performatieve teksten, verspreid in de openbare ruimte. Bij de opening op 5/2 en tijdens de finissage op 5/3 worden er performances gegeven.

PaperCuts shows visualizations of language, writing, communication and codes in relation to identity and attitude. Oliver Doe, Ra’fat Ali, Mariana Jurado Rico, Alice Slyngstad present their ideas with performances, installations, paintings, pamphlets and other media.
Alice Slyngstad (1990, NO) examines performance as medium, method and lens.
Their work is weaving through layers of different audience modes, with perspectives that ask who or what is performing for whom? Writing and text are a central element and process, practice and presentations are characterized by the exploration of language, voices and stories.
For PaperCuts, Slyngstad presents the work “Goodie Bags” which is based on a text exploring physical learning through interfaces that distribute goods, sexual desire or information. The work traces sensitivities and memories from the private sphere to a public, interconnected environment. In Goodie bags, the mining of information, bodies and desires becomes detritus, shedded skin- systemized and animated by a practice of collection. Attention is constantly shifting between micro and macro, continuously looking for gaps, holes and spaces to fit in. The communication is carried out through the installation, between opposition screens that place the viewer between the material.

For PaperCuts he will create a virtual 3D environment in which a ‘wholeness’ is created by using an orthographic camera. Ra’fat is working on an installation, set up in the Groningen landscape, that visually represents the ‘vacuum’ of his hybrid identity. The cinematic result of this is processed in the setup in SIGN.
Mariana Jurado Rico (1991, CO) creates conditions for fusion between people. Her work is partly formed by the word NO: as an image, a symbol, a vibe, as a mood. It’s about failure as a motto, an instrument of resistance, a way of life. During PaperCuts she presents the work ‘I would prefer not to: we want to fail.’, a combination of previous research into the word ‘NO’ and an opportunity for dialogue with the environment in which the visitor has input in dealing with the visual expressions of the word. In the workshop she gives during the opening of PaperCuts, you can let go of your expectations of success. Her graphic riso printed pamphlets will be found throughout the city.

The work of Oliver Doe (1994, UK) considers the fluid roles of queer identities, primarily from a linguistic point of view. Their interdisciplinary practice explores queer communication through varying levels of coding and abstraction, combining the visual aspect of texts with performative and descriptive matters and meanings. In SIGN, Oliver presents a selection of paintings, combined with new text-based works and performances. They also makes pamphlets with stimulating performative texts, distributed in public space. Performances will be executed at the opening on 5/2 and during the finissage on 5/3.
