Linguistic Images is een tentoonstelling tussen taal en beeld. Welke mechanismen zitten er achter de vorming van tekens en taal ? Wat is hun onderliggende structuur, hoe komen ze tot stand en hoe worden ze gebruikt? In hun beeldend werk onderzoeken Josse Pyl, Danae Io, Pleun Gremmen, Jelte van Lente dit en maken zij biologische, technologische, maatschappelijke, semantische bouwstenen in allerlei disciplines zichtbaar.
Linguistic Images is an exhibition between language and image. What mechanisms are behind the formation of signs and language? What is their underlying structure, how are they created and how are they used? In their visual work, Josse Pyl, Danae Io, Pleun Gremmen and Jelte van Lente investigate these matters and make biological, technological, social, semantic building blocks visible in all kinds of disciplines.
Over de kunstenaars
Josse Pyl
In het werk van Josse Pyl (België, 1991) ontstaat er een beeldende interactie tussen de productie en presentatie van taal. Zijn tekeningen, sculpturen en kinetische objecten tonen een verlangen om een nieuwe structuur te ontwikkelen waarin zowel gecodeerde taal als gedachten leesbaar worden. Met een achtergrond als typograaf onderzoekt Pyl de constructie van taal aan de hand van organische, biologische en technologische communicatiemiddelen, zoals in het werk ‘Long in the Tooth’. Pyl’s werken zijn op te vatten als een reeks bouwblokken, die samen een verhaal, een ruimtelijk geworden taal vormen. Pyl deed in 2017-2018 een residentie bij de Rijksacademie Amsterdam. jossepyl.com
Danae Io
Danae Io (Nederland, 1993) richt zich in haar huidige onderzoek op de strategie van het modelleren van de stem en het systematiseren van speeches. Door middel van video, geluid en tekst duikt Io in technologische en historische infrastructuren waarin taal en de stem circuleren. Zo zijn haar ‘Tongues are Trending’ een fictief verhaal over het modelleren van de tong, als reactie op een tongmodel dat je voor 1 euro kan kopen op wish.com. Daaromheen heeft zij het proces en het modelleren van de stem onderzocht met algoritmische voorspellingen en ook dat wat niet in een computermodel gevat kan worden. Zij is afgestudeerd aan het Sandberg Instituut (Master of Voice) in 2018. danaep.com
Pleun Gremmen
In haar werk onderzoekt Pleun Gremmen (Nederland, 1992) naar manieren om narratieven te scheppen en te delen door middel van verschillende media, waarmee zij reflecteert op de subcultuur en politiek van het internet. Met name talige uitingen van online manifestaties van extreemrechtse gemeenschappen hebben haar interesse. Zo maakte ze een zelf opgezette politieke onderzoeksplatform als Alt Reality Lexicon. Door middel van 3D-rendering, grafisch ontwerp, presentaties en installaties probeert Gremmen kennislacunes tussen ‘netizens’ en burgers te dichten. Ze studeerde in 2018 af van het Piet Zwart Instituut in Rotterdam (Media Design and Communication, Experimental Publishing). pleungremmen.nl
Jelte van Lente
Jelte van Lente – Lonely Atlas
In zijn tekeningen probeert Jelte van Lente (Nederland, 1986) niet alleen waarneembare elementen uit alledaagse omgevingen te vangen, maar ook de alle gedachten, dromen en gevoelens die daaruit ontstaan. Dit levert een confrontatie op die volgens Van Lente inherent is aan het medium: binnen de realiteit van een tekening kan het concrete en het abstracte naast elkaar bestaan. Met ‘Word Works’, een reeks tekeningen van zelf bedachte systemen en verbeeldingen, wordt dit proces goed zichtbaar gemaakt. Van Lente haalt inspiratie uit boekillustraties, films, outsider art en strips. Hij studeerde in 2016 af aan Academie Minerva, Groningen. jeltevanlente.com

About the artists”
In her work Pleun Gremmen (the Netherlands, 1992) investigates ways to create and share narratives through various media, reflecting on the subculture and politics of the internet. She is particularly interested in linguistic expressions of online manifestations of extreme right-wing communities. For example, she created a self-established political research platform such as Alt Reality Lexicon. Through 3D rendering, graphic design, presentations and installations, Gremmen tries to close knowledge gaps between “netizens” and citizens. She graduated in 2018 from the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam (Media Design and Communication, Experimental Publishing).

In his drawings, Jelte van Lente (the Netherlands, 1986) tries not only to capture perceptible elements from everyday environments, but also the all thoughts, dreams and feelings that arise from them. This results in a confrontation that, according to Van Lente, is inherent in the medium: within the reality of a drawing, the concrete and the abstract can co-exist. With “Word Works”, a series of drawings of self-conceived systems and imaginations, this process is made visible. Van Lente draws inspiration from book illustrations, films, outsider art and comics. Josse Pyl‘s work (Belgium, 1991) creates a visual interaction between the production and presentation of language. His drawings, sculptures and kinetic objects show a desire to develop a new structure in which both coded language and thoughts become readable. With a background as a typographer, Pyl investigates the construction of language on the basis of organic, biological and technological means of communication, such as in the work ‘Long in the Tooth’. Pyl’s works can be seen as a series of building blocks, which together form a story, a language that has become spatial. Pyl did a residency at the Rijksacademie Amsterdam in 2017-2018. jossepyl.com
In her current research, Danae Io (the Netherlands, 1993) focuses on the strategy of voice modelling and systematization of speeches. Through video, sound and text, Io delves into technological and historical infrastructures in which language and voice circulate. Her ‘Tongues are Trending’ are a fictional story about the modelling of the tongue, as a reaction to a tongue model that you can buy for 1 euro on wish.com. Around it she investigated the process and modelling of the voice with algorithmic predictions and also that which cannot be captured in a computer model.
