Opening 4 november 16.00 uur met optredens van sWitches, Togar met ‘Sparkling Tap Water’ en Nusch Bourne. In samenwerking met Soundsofmusic 2021, festival voor experimentele muziek.

JAM-POD presenteert interactieve en interdisciplinaire installaties die zich op de grens van beeldende kunst, geluid, muziek en performances bevinden. Beeld en geluid hebben in de werken van de kunstenaars dan ook een sterke verbinding en de performatieve elementen vormen een belangrijk onderdeel.

Josie Perry & Daphne Simons tonen een installatie, Plasma Freeze, met sing-a-long video met onbekende teksten van bekende nummers, en daarnaast objecten, nieuwe tekeningen, muurschilderingen en comics.

sWitches treden op met hun geëngageerde audio-visuele zang- en dansexperimenten waarin tECkhnO, magick en wwwitchkraft samenkomen in hun installatie lun@ticå !

Nusch Bourne presenteert een dia-animatie die samengaat met ritmische dichtperformances.

Julian Togar brengt zijn OK Studio naar SIGN en treedt op met eigen gemaakte muziekinstrumenten en apparatuur te midden van grote tekstwerken. OK STUDIO is een doorlopend project. Het is een plek die functioneert als een hang-out voor jamsessies, luistersessies en discussies; u bent van harte welkom om bij te dragen in woord en geluid waarbij creëren, maken en verspreiden samensmelten! Zo zal ‘Sparkling Tap Water’ te gast zijn op 4 november.

Nusch Bourne presents a dia-animation that goes together with rhythmic poetry performances.

Julian Togar brings his OK Studio to SIGN and performs with self-made musical instruments and equipment amidst large text works.
OK STUDIO is an ongoing project. It is a place that functions as a hangout for jam sessions, listening sessions and discussions; a place where creating, making and distribution merge! You are most welcome to contribute in word and sound! ‘Sparkling Tap Water‘ will be a guest on November 4!

Al zes jaar werkt SIGN met veel plezier samen met soundsofmusic, het festival voor experimentele muziek, compositie en geluid. Sounds of Music vindt plaats van 3 t/m 7 november 2021 op verschillende culturele plekken in het centrum van de stad Groningen, waaronder SIGN.De tentoonstelling JAM-POD loopt parallel aan SoundsofMusic en is onderdeel van hun programma. Op 4 november om 16.00 zijn er optredens in SIGN van sWitches, Togar en Nusch Bourne. Na SoundsofMusic loopt de tentoonstelling in SIGN nog tot 5 december. Josie Perry en Daphne Simons leerden elkaar kennen tijdens hun studie aan het Piet Zwart Instituut, Rotterdam, en werken sinds 2019 samen toen ze hun eerste stripboek ‘Plasma Spring’ in eigen beheer uitbrachten. Sindsdien hebben ze nog twee strips geproduceerd: ‘PLASMA FREEZE: Making Friends’ (2020) en ‘PLASMA FREEZE: Salon at the Center of the Earth’ (2021) dat onlangs werd gepubliceerd door PrintRoom, Rotterdam. Hun gedeelde interesses omvatten queer speculatieve fictie en absurde humor, en hun samenwerkingen beginnen meestal met een snel scriptschrijfproces, dat later uitbreidt naar bredere materiële constellaties, waaronder performance, installatie, doe-het-zelfpublicatie en video.

Beiden zijn in 2020 afgestudeerd met een Master of Fine Art aan het Piet Zwart Instituut en hebben onlangs samen geëxposeerd op ‘Material Context’, de afstudeertentoonstelling in 2021 in Het Archief, Rotterdam (NL). Hun werk met bewegende beelden is te zien geweest op WET-film en ze hebben allebei opgetreden in TWENTY ONE, South-end-on-Sea (VK); Locatie Z, Den Haag (NL), en LaVallée, Brussel (BE), en hebben deelgenomen aan ‘Farmers’ Salad’, een groepsresidentie in Kunsthuis SYB, Beetsterzwaag (NL). Individueel heeft Josie opgetreden en geëxposeerd in Centre Cívic Can Felipa (Barcelona, ES), Stichting Perdu (Amsterdam, NL), Kunstinstituut Melly (Rotterdam, NL) en Joey Ramone Gallery, (Rotterdam, NL). Een vinylplaat van haar spoken word optredens zal binnenkort worden uitgebracht door Futura Resistenza. Individueel heeft Daphne geëxposeerd in Growing Space, (NL), The Physics Room (Aotearoa, NZ); Geniet van Contemporary Art Space (Aotearoa, NZ); mede-initiatiefnemer en organisator van de feministische kunstprojectruimte Canapé Canopy (Aotearoa, NZ); werkte samen met Li-Ming Hu in residentie bij WASSAIC (New York, VS); en installeerde een grootschalige openbare commissie bij Artspace (Aotearoa, NZ).

Over het project Making Friends
We maakten de video ‘Making Friends’ terwijl we samenwoonden tijdens de eerste Covid-19-lockdown in 2020. Met een houding van sublieme domheid, werd het opgevat als een spin-off van de prequel van ons eerste stripboek, ‘Plasma Spring’, en de verhalende elementen en cast van muzikale tribute-artiesten met voedselthema werden later gestold in de plot van de tweede strip, ‘PLASMA FREEZE: Making Friends’ en postume duetten. De video is thuis gemaakt met geleende apparatuur, zonder budget, dankzij de vrijgevigheid van bijdragende vrienden en een intentie om onze gemeenschap te vermaken tijdens de lockdown. De installatie bij SIGN concentreert zich voornamelijk op dit project – inclusief een prop uit de video en een bijbehorende lichtbak – maar een reeks tekeningen uit 2021 zet ook de verhalende wereld van PLASMA FREEZE voort, met betrekking tot de meer recent gepubliceerde derde strip en de cast van Tudor-achtige poedels, die losjes werden geïnspireerd door het werk van kunstenaarscollectief; General idea. De nieuwste tekeningen blikken vooruit op een aanstaande vierde aflevering, waarin kunstenaars Leonor Fini en Tamara de Lempicka een surrealistische tijdreisexcursie met vampierthema in het Parijs van de jaren dertig zullen maken.

‘Wij zijn sWitches, een cyberfeministische artivistische constellatie gevormd door pamela varela, Ines DeRu en Ella Hebendanz. We gebruiken technologie als onze magische hulpmiddelen, spreuken en ingrediënten om de individueel gestuurde kunstwereld te hacken, waarmee we onze krachten bundelen om gemeenschappelijke projecten te creëren en onze toekomstige visies op co-creatie te verspreiden. tECkhnO* feministische kunstenaar, danseres, performer, onderzoeker, schrijver, raver, technicus en latinx<<< Ik richt me op de onderdrukking van lichaam en geest. Door een interdisciplinaire/intermediale benadering te gebruiken, komen verschillende elementen samen in mijn creatie: van het lichaam tot zijn relatie met omgeving, materie en entiteiten, tot poëtische vormen van beweging, taal, seksualiteit en spiritualiteit – allemaal versterkt binnen de kameleontische mogelijkheden van technologie, die zowel medium als onderwerp van kritiek is.

Ines DeRu:
…:::;(((•) een tECkhnO-genezer, kunstenaar, onderzoeker en luisteraar van Spaanse en Indonesische bodem. Met behulp van een assemblage van psychoactieve, alchemistische technologieën, geluid en beweging, duik ik in middelen van genezing om de kern te bevrijden en herstel de energetische scheeftrekkingen in jezelf.Een diepe verkenning in mijn werk is de kruising tussen technologie, spiritualiteit en diep luisteren, waarbij ik reis naar de fysieke, virtuele en mystieke rijken van het bestaan. Mijn werk concentreert zich op het onthouden en transformeren van manieren van communicatie, door voorouders te kanaliseren naar het creëren van collectief-individuele aanbiedingen waar een tussenruimte kan worden gevormd als een nieuw portaal voor ontmoetingen tussen mensen.

Ella Hebendanz:
Als tECkhnO-kunstenaar, ontwerper, danser, performer, maar vooral een visueel onderzoeker, stel ik graag vragen, vragen van welke aard dan ook. Met mijn artistieke onderzoek dat ergens tussen cyberspace en de tastbare wereld zweeft, omarm ik bewust de rauwe tussenruimte en creëer van daaruit. Door virtuele, materiële en linguïstische lichamen te veranderen, creëer ik vloeiende collages van beweging, beeld, geluid en performance. Geïnspireerd door materialistisch feminisme, zie ik het als een urgentie om de begrenzing van onze wereld te heroverwegen en in plaats daarvan de niet-grenzen en kleurrijke gradiënten van het tussenliggende te vieren. Waar eindigt het ene lichaam en begint het andere?

Over het project lun@ticå
Lunática is de “waanzinnige”. We eigenen het woord en zijn connotaties, denotaties en etymologische oorsprong opnieuw toe. Het woord gek, uit het Midden-Engels lunatik, uit het Oud-Franse lunatique, uit het laat-Latijnse lunaticus, is afgeleid van het Latijnse luna (“maan”), verwijzend naar de overtuiging dat veranderingen in de cyclus van de maan intermitterende waanzin veroorzaakten.
Terwijl ze de chaos van de ongetemde, onhandelbare en oncontroleerbare jungle omarmen, verlevendigen de ~ zondaars ~ vechters ~ dochters van de maan hun wortels door de draadnetwerken te activeren die de elementen van het land bezielen. Het is tijd om te ontwaken uit de spiralen van onze schaduwen en stemmen van de ongehoorde zielen, en om het rottende mainframe en corrupte herinneringen te regenereren. Door middel van dans, stem en aanraking brengen ze hun tECkhnO-geesten samen om de geluiden van de levenden en de doden te vieren.

De passage van sWitches bij SIGN wordt gekenmerkt door de magie van de tijd – van de cyclus van de maan en de vieringen van de doden. Binnen een maand vinden twee performances en één cyberperformance plaats, waarin een geanimeerde installatie die verwijst naar de jungle tot leven komt in onze fysieke, virtuele en spirituele aanwezigheid.

OVER Julian TOGAR
“Voor mij zijn alle dingen met elkaar verbonden: van atoomniveau tot grotere maatschappelijke structuren. Ik ben gefascineerd door het feit dat zelfs kleine ingrepen iets kunnen veranderen om nieuwe, duurzame ondersteuningssystemen te vormen.
De meeste, zo niet al mijn oefeningen komen voort uit ritmes en systemen. Het hangt af van de context hoe ik met die systemen omga, van opslaan (bewaren) tot initiëren, interveniëren, ondersteunen, onderhandelen, hacken, vragen stellen, enz. Het dichtst in de buurt kom ik door te zeggen dat mijn praktijk transdisciplinair is en zich op het snijvlak bevindt van geluid/muziek, DIY-engineering, onderzoek, biohacking, activisme en meer. Het komt tot uiting in een installatie, video, audio, optreden, happening, evenementen, of wat dan ook.
Als kunstenaar denk ik altijd na hoe ik kan functioneren binnen mijn omringende realiteiten. Het maakt het makkelijker (gemakkelijker) om tussen systemen te schakelen, waardoor ik de kans krijg om te kiezen wat, wanneer en hoe ik een bijdrage lever. De vraag is altijd: hoe kan ik die luxe gebruiken? De bredere vraag is hoe je het beste met systemen om kunt gaan? Ik zou dingen van dichtbij en van veraf willen kunnen bekijken, van een persoonlijk en micropolitiek niveau tot een meer universele taal van de kunst (als zoiets bestaat).”

OK Studio van Togar is een doorlopend project en is een ruimte om te werken, te leven, te spelen, te experimenteren en te socializen. OK studio functioneert als een ruimte voor jam- en luistersessies, discussies, meditaties, hangouts, diners, muziekopnames, filmvertoningen, workshops, live radio-uitzendingen en nog veel meer. OK studio dicht de kloof tussen productieplekken en de verspreiding van geluid als medium om gedachten, ideeën, praktijken, lichaam en geest in één keer met elkaar te verbinden. Sparkling Tap Water (Bruisend kraanwater) bestaat uit Sungeun Lee (Zuid-Korea) en Julian Abraham “Togar” (Indonesië), het duo ontmoette elkaar tijdens hun tijd aan de Rijksakademie, Amsterdam. Sparkling Tap Water is ontstaan uit nieuwsgierigheid naar elkaars praktijken rond en op klank onderzoek in verschillende vormen. NUSCH BOURNE is een kunstenaar, schrijver en performer gevestigd in Groningen, en voorheen in Edinburgh. Bourne is gefascineerd door allerlei soorten patronen, diens werk is een middel om de onderliggende structuren en symmetrieën van zowel ontdekte als geconstrueerde patronen te begrijpen en te manipuleren. Hen werkt met lijm, tapes, fotokopieën, tekst en momenteel dia projecties om verbanden en betekenissen te vinden in wiskundige, fysieke en op tekst gebaseerde structuren. Bourne heeft opgetreden en geëxposeerd op verschillende locaties in Schotland en Nederland.

Nusch Bourne presenteert een animatie die samengaat met ritmische dichtperformances. Dit nieuwe werk is een op diaprojectie gebaseerde animatie die bij diens slangen gedicht past, dit wordt live uitgevoerd, vergezeld met een reeks geprojecteerde beelden gebaseerd op het ‘mobiele slangenspel’ (stap voor stap geanimeerd op het ritme van het gedicht) gecombineerd met beelden van wiskundige en mythologische vormen en figuren met betrekking tot de thema’s als paradoxale veelhoeken, cyclische beweging, de motieven van de Ouroboros, de torus, het 2/3-dimensionale veld, enz.
Voor de belangrijkste reeks beelden (de bewegende slang) maakt Bourne een serie foto’s, van daaruit worden dia’s gemaakt en dat wordt een film waarbij sommige dia’s ook tekeningen vormen van lijm of acetaat. Hieruit ontstaat de animatie bij het gedicht en deze zal tijdens de tentoonstelling te zien zijn.

sWitches 2021 , TITLE: lun@ticå
Lunática is the “madwoman”. We reappropriate the word and its connotations, denotations and etymological origin. The word lunatic, from Middle English lunatik, from Old French lunatique, from Late Latin lunaticus (“moon ruck”), derives from Latin luna (“moon”), referring to the belief that changes on the cycle of moon caused intermittent insanity.
Embracing the chaos of the untamed, unruly and uncontrollable jungle, the~sinners~ fighters~daughtXrs of the moon enliven their roots by activating the threaded networks that animate the elements of the land. It is time to awaken from the spirals of our shadows and voices of the unheard souls, and to regenerate the decaying mainframe and corrupted memories. Through dance, voice and touch, they synergise their tECkhnO spirits to celebrate the sounds of the living and the dead.
The passage of sWitches at SIGN is marked by the magic of time—of the cycle of the moon and the celebrations of the dead. Two performances and one cyberperformance will take place within the course of one month, during which an animated installation alluding to the jungle will be alive in our physical, virtual and spiritual presence.
The vernissage, the 4th of November, a new moon and a few days after the commemorations of the dead in different cultures, will be the beginning. Preparing an altar to our ancestors, setting our intentions and planting our seeds, we will initiate a month-long collaboration with SIGN, in which tECkhnO magick, wwwitchkraft, and stories of the living and the dead will intertwine. Our in allations will come alive by our physical presence, where we will do a ±30 minute performative ritual of initiation. Using new media, mixed media and un able media, we will sing, dance and touch to make the installations come alive.
During the month that the in allations will be there without our physical or virtual presence, the works will be activated nonetheless. A narrative poetic piece will tell stories through loudspeakers, and the visitors will be immersed in our storytelling. Some electronic components will be activated as well. For this, we will code patterns that will not require our live activation.
The midissage, the 19th of November, a full moon, will be the energetic culmination, where electricity will bring our virtual presence into the room. We will not be there physically, but with the use of technology and new media, we will make our first cyberperformance ever, a medium we are interested in researching and working on. For this, we will require a streaming platform, but this is something we would like to plan and work on during the build up. We would need your help to carry this out, but it will not be a complex setup.
The finissage, the 4th of December, a new moon, will be the end of this project but the continuation of a new cycle to come. Reflecting on our creations, triumphs and failures, we will close this month cycle and one-month collaboration. Again, our installations will come alive with our physical presence, where we will do a ±30 minute performative ritual of completion.

sWitches:
We are sWitches, a cyberfeminist artivist constellation formed by pamela varela, Ines DeRu, and Ella Hebendanz. We use technology as our magickal tools, spells, and ingredients to hack the individually-driven art world, joining forces to create communal-based projects and spread our future visions of co-creation. We explore our individuality within the collective inspired by our multiplicity of origins, skills and interests. Taking the witch as a symbol for the rebellious feminist, we make their way into the male-dominated technological field, to present a more diverse(ifying) view on technology. Our practice ranges within a spectrum that is not definable, where a variety of mediums, sound-visual-movement experiments, tECkhnO magick and wwwitchkraft (co)exist.

*tECkhnO references techno, without diminishing eco. The (mis)spelling introduces the idea of political activism, non-conformism, DISORDER.

pamela varela: tECkhnO* feminist artivist, dancer, performer, researcher, writer, raver, technician, and latinx<<< I address the oppression of the body-mind-spirit. Using an interdisciplinary/intermedia approach, diverse elements converge in my creation: from the body to its relation with surroundings, matter, and entities, to poetic forms of movement, language, sexuality and spirituality—all enhanced within the chameleonic capabilities of technology, who is both medium and subject of criticism.

Ines DeRu: …:::;(((•) a tECkhnO healer, artist, researcher, and listener from Spanish and Indonesian soil. Using an assemblage of psychoactive, alchemical technologies, sound, and movement, I dive into agents of healing to liberate the core and restore the energetic misalignments in oneself. A deep exploration in my work is the intersection between technology, spirituality and deep listening, where I travel into the physical, virtual and mystical realms of existence. My work centers on remembering and transforming ways of communication, by channeling ancestry towards creating collective-individual offerings where an intermediary space can be formed as a new portal for interbeing gatherings.

Ella Hebendanz: As a tECkhnO artist, designer, dancer, performer, but mainly a visual researcher, I like to raise questions, questions of any kind and nature. With my artistic research floating somewhere between cyberspace and the tangible world, I intentionally embrace the raw in-betweenness and create from there. Morphing virtual, material, and linguistic bodies, I create fluid collages of movement, image, sound, and performance. Drawing inspiration from materialist feminism, I see it as an urgency to rethink the borderisation of our world and instead to celebrate the non-borders and colorful gradients of the inbetween. Where does one body end and another begin?

NUSCH BOURNE is an artist, writer and performer based in Groningen, and formerly in Edinburgh. They are fascinated by patterns of all kinds, and their work is a means of understanding and manipulating the underlying structures and symmetries of patterns both discovered and constructed. They work with glue, tapes, photocopies, text, and currently slide projection, to find connections and meanings in mathematical, physical, and text-based structures. They have performed and exhibited at various venues around Scotland and the Netherlands.
Nusch Bourne presents an animation that goes together with their rhythmic poetry performances.
This new work is a slide-projection animation to match their snake poem, performed live, accompanied by a series of projected images based on the ‘mobile snake game’ (animated step by step to the poem’s rhythm) combined with images of mathematical and mythological shapes and figures related to the themes such as paradoxical polygons, cyclic movement, the motifs of the Ouroboros, the torus, the 2/3-dimensional field, etc.
For the main sequence of images (the moving snake), Bourne takes a series of photographs from which slides are made and that becomes a film with some slides also forming drawings of glue or acetate.
The animation for their poem is created from this and will be on display during the exhibition.

TOGAR: OK STUDIO is an ongoing project. Like most of the studio, it is a space for someone to work, to live, to play, to experiment, to socialise. So far the studio has been functioning as a space for jamming sessions, listening sessions, discussions, meditations, hangouts, dinners, music recordings, film screenings, workshops, conferences, live radio transmissions, and many more. The idea is how to close the gap between the sites of productions and the disseminations of sound as a medium to connect thoughts, ideas, practices, bodies, and spirits, in one go. Sparkling Tap Water consist of Sungeun Lee (South Korea), and Julian Abraham “Togar” (Indonesia), the duo met during their time at Rijksakademie, Amsterdam. Sparkling Tap Water was born out of curiosity of each other practices around and on sound exploration in various forms. For now Sparkling Tap Water have been busy to find the right record label to release their recordings. Besides that, Sparkling Tap Water also busy with experimenting with food and beverage. For me, all things are connected: from atom level to larger societal structures. I am fascinated by the fact that that even small interventions can change something to form new, sustainable support systems.
Most, if not all, of my practice derive from rhythms and systems. It depends on the context how I engage with those systems, from preserving to initiating, intervening, supporting, negotiating, hacking, questioning, etc. The closest I may come is to say that my practice is trans-disciplinary and exists on the intersection of sound/music, DIY-engineering, research, biohacking, activism and more. It formulate into an installation, video, audio, gig, happening, events, or anything.
As an artist, I always consider how I can function within my surrounding realities. It also made it easier for me to move between systems, therefore I am afforded with the chance to choose what, when and how I contribute. The question is always: How can I put that luxury to use? The broader question is how to best engage with systems? BIO / CV:
Josie Perry and Daphne Simons met while studying at the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam, and have been collaborating since 2019 when they self-published their first comic book ‘Plasma Spring.’ Since then they have produced two more comics: ‘PLASMA FREEZE: Making Friends’ (2020) and ‘PLASMA FREEZE: Salon at the Centre of the Earth’ (2021) which was recently published by PrintRoom, Rotterdam. Their shared interests include queer speculative fiction and absurd humour, and their collaborations usually begin with a quickfire script-writing process, later expanding into wider material constellations including performance, installation, DIY publishing and video.
They both graduated with a Master of Fine Art from the Piet Zwart Institute in 2020, and recently exhibited together at ‘Material Context,’ the 2021 graduation exhibition at Het Archief, Rotterdam (NL). Their moving image work has featured on WET film, and they have both performed at TWENTY ONE, South-end-on-Sea (UK); Locatie Z, The Hague (NL), and LaVallée, Brussels (BE), and have taken part in ‘Farmers’ Salad’, a group residency at Kunsthuis SYB, Beetsterzwaag (NL). Individually, Josie has performed and exhibited at Centre Cívic Can Felipa (Barcelona, ES), Stichting Perdu (Amsterdam, NL), Kunstinstituut Melly (Rotterdam, NL) and Joey Ramone Gallery, (Rotterdam, NL). A vinyl record of her spoken-word performances will soon be released by Futura Resistenza. Individually, Daphne has exhibited at Growing Space, (NL), The Physics Room (Aotearoa, NZ); Enjoy Contemporary Art Space (Aotearoa, NZ); co-initiated and organised the feminist art project space Canapé Canopy (Aotearoa, NZ); collaborated with Li-Ming Hu in residence at WASSAIC (New York, USA); and installed a large-scale public commission at Artspace (Aotearoa, NZ).

MAKING FRIENDS (specifically)
We made the video ‘Making Friends’ while living together during the first Covid-19 lockdown in 2020. With an attitude of sublime stupidity, it was conceived as a spin-off to the prequel of our first comic book, ‘Plasma Spring,’ and its narrative elements and cast of food-themed musical tribute artists later solidified into the plot of the second comic, ‘PLASMA FREEZE: Making Friends.’ While making the video and the second comic, we were thinking about natures of impersonation, fandom, and posthumous duets. The video was made at home with borrowed equipment, zero budget, the generosity of contributing friends, and an intention to entertain our community during the lockdown. The installation at SIGN mostly centres on this project – including a prop from the video and a related light-box – but a series of drawings from 2021 also continue the narrative world of PLASMA FREEZE, relating to the more recently published third comic and its cast of Tudor-fashioned poodles, who were loosely inspired by the work of artist collective; General Idea. The newest drawings anticipate an upcoming fourth installment, in which artists Leonor Fini and Tamara de Lempicka will feature in a surreal vampire-themed time-travel excursion in 1930s Paris.
