De opmaat van FREE STYLE wordt gevormd door Muurfriezen, speciaal gemaakt door genoemde kunstenaars voor 2 activiteiten in SIGN: “Soup, Noise & Knowledge” op 16 januari (i.s.m. Academie Popcultuur, Leeuwarden) en “Subbacultcha! Wham wham Dayparty” op 17 januari (i.s.m. Subbacultcha!, Wham wham records). Muurfriezen zijn tekeningen of schilderingen direct op de muur of op papier langs de bovenkant van de wanden van SIGN, boven het publiek. Ze vormen een goede match tussen jonge beeldende kunst en de niet mainstream popmuziek.
Voor de expositie FREE STYLE van 25 januari t/m 22 februari worden de Muurfriezen verder uitgebouwd en aangevuld tot een volledige presentatie, waarbij alle disciplines mogelijk zijn en de ruimte van SIGN volledig benut wordt. De kunstenaars reageren op de plek en op elkaars werk.
Niels Goos, Tom Trickett, Anan Striker, Kees Westervelt houden zich bezig met en zetten vraagtekens bij kunsthistorische contexten en interpretaties. Ze zoeken grenzen op, vervagen deze, fragmenteren en ontleden. In een variatie aan disciplines recyclen en definiëren zij dit alles opnieuw tot een nieuwe persoonlijke, vrije associatieve wereld met nieuwe betekenissen en esthetiek. Het werk vibreert tussen dissonantie en harmonie en kenmerkt zich door een houding van controle en tegelijkertijd weer loslaten.

Wall friezes & Exhibition

OPENING Sunday 25th of January 16.00 hrs.
The kick off for FREE STYLE is Wall Friezes especially created by the artists because of two activities in SIGN: “Soup, Noise & Knowledge” on January16th (together with Academie Popcultuur, Leeuwarden) and “Subbacultcha! Wham wham Dayparty” on January 17th (in collaboration with Subbacultcha!, Wham wham records). Friezes are long ornaments of wall drawings and paintings directly on the wall or on paper attached to the upper side of the walls of SIGN, overhead the audience. They form a good match between young visual arts and indie pop music.
For the exhibition FREE STYLE from January 25th until February 22nd the Wall friezes will be worked out and extended to a complete presentation in which all disciplines are possible and the space of SIGN is used entirely. The artists will interact with the space and each-others work.
Niels Goos, Tom Trickett, Anan Striker, Kees Westervelt deal with and question historical contexts and interpretations. They search for the limits and blur these by fragmenting and dissecting. In a variety of disciplines they recycle and define again all this into a new personal, free associative world with new meanings, aesthetics. The work vibrates between dissonance and harmony and charterizes itself by an attitude of control and at the same time letting go.
