BIG SLEEP – multidisciplinaire muurconstellaties

Klaske Bootsma en Kamilė Česnavičiūtė tonen in hun nieuwe werk een scala van sociale interacties waarbij de waarde van het individu in een groep in beschouwing wordt genomen. Ook hun werk in SIGN zal zich op kritische wijze verhouden tot dit gegeven, binnen de huidige samenleving. Ook als de omstandigheden veranderen.

Door de coronacrisis heeft SIGN de programmering voor de komende tijd wat omgegooid. Daardoor is er ruimte ontstaan om bovengenoemde jonge Groninger kunstenaars de kans te geven om tijdens een werkperiode nieuwe werken te maken en te presenteren op een aansluitende expositie die geheel coronaproof is. Juist in dit soort onzekere tijden vindt SIGN het van belang om de ontwikkeling van kunstenaars te blijven stimuleren.

Een eigen wereld scheppen op de muren, in de etalage en in de ruimte van SIGN – dat is de opdracht voor Klaske Bootsma en Kamilė Česnavičiūtė, twee kunstenaars met een overeenkomstige werkwijze wat teken- en schilderwerk betreft en ook qua onderwerp is er verwantschap, waarbij de menselijke conditie centraal staat. Met BIG SLEEP reflecteren zij op de collectieve sluimerstand waarin de wereld nu lijkt zijn te verzonken – wat bevindt zich achter onze gesloten oogleden, en wat dekt deze wakende slaap toe?

Dit wordt getoond in de vorm van grote monumentale samengestelde werkstukken aan de muur, collages, muurschilderingen en tekeningen, maar ook aan de hand van affiche-achtige tekstuele uitingen en allerlei combinaties hiervan. Van associatief tot narratief, van plompverloren op zichzelf staand tot een beeldverhaal, van ieder voor zich in eigen specifieke ruimte, tot door elkaar of deels gezamenlijk – alles is mogelijk in SIGN.

Vanaf 3 juni is het werk van Klaske en Kamilė van binnen en buiten zichtbaar, via de etalage aan de voorkant en de achterdeur van het garage-gedeelte – met BIG SLEEP worden de diverse mogelijkheden van het gebouw van SIGN weer duidelijk. Helaas is er door de huidige omstandigheden geen opening, maar we zijn wel van plan om een afsluiting te organiseren. Houd daarvoor de berichtgeving in de gaten.


Over de kunstenaars
Klaske Bootsma
Begin dit jaar verbleef Klaske Bootsma (Nederland, 1995) in de voormalig zuivelfabriek in Kolderveen als onderdeel van het residentieproject ‘Wasteland Kolderveen | Klaske verveelt zich’, georganiseerd door SIGN en KiK Kolderveen in het kader van Artist in Space (Noordenaars en We the North). Als vervolg op dit project is Klaske nu uitgenodigd voor BIG SLEEP in het kader van ‘Opdrachtgeverschap en mentoring’, gesubsidieerd vanuit het Mondriaan Fonds en gekoppeld aan het Artist in Space-project. Gedurende het project in SIGN krijgt zowel Klaske als Kamile mentoring van Andrea Stultiens (http://www.andreastultiens.nl/).

Klaske Bootsma studeerde in 2018 af aan Academie Minerva. Zowel tijdens haar studie als in haar kunstenaarspraktijk speelt zelfonderzoek voor Klaske een belangrijke rol – wat is eerlijk? Wat is echt? Wanneer wordt een bepaald soort dagelijks handelen kunst? Haar focus ligt tijdens de werkperiode op een ‘in-between mood’, een soort lege ruimte waar we door de huidige omstandigheden in zitten en waar alles – en niets- mogelijk is. Klaske woont en werkt in Groningen.

Kamilė Česnavičiūtė 
In de grote, kleurige werk van Kamilė Česnavičiūtė (Litouwen, 1996) staan mensachtige figuren in het middelpunt – zittend in vreemde hoeken, in contact met andere figuren en objecten of alleenstaand, weergegeven door een combinatie van schilderen en tekenen. Kamilė nodigt je uit om door de onwerkelijke taferelen in haar werk te reflecteren op hoe wij samen leven en wat onze eigen positie daarin is. Kamilė studeerde in 2019 af aan Academie Minerva. Zij won recentelijk de Sluijters Prijs 2020 voor Jong Talent in de Schilderkunst en ook is ze genomineerd voor de Buning Brongers Prijs 2020. Kamilė woont en werkt in Groningen.

Vanwege het coronavirus hanteert SIGN een deurbeleid. Er mogen drie bezoekers tegelijk binnen zijn. Tijdens openingstijden in juni zijn er twee ingangen: Winschoterkade 10 en Radebinnensingel. Het werk is ook vanaf de straat te zien.

SIGN doet ook mee aan het nationale initiatief Unlocked/Reconnected. Bepaalde werken uit BIG SLEEP, die ook goed van buiten zichtbaar zijn, maken hiervan deel uit en zijn speciaal door Kamile en Klaske hiervoor gemaakt. Unlocked/Reconnected is een collectieve tentoonstelling van 1 juni t/m 1 september 2020 waaraan 200 nationale ‘huizen voor de kunst’ meedoen. Vertrekpunt voor ‘Unlocked/Reconnected’ is het idee van solidariteit, de wil om gezamenlijk te reflecteren op wat (t)huis is. Het moment markeert dat na de lockdown de kunstinstellingen hun deuren weer mogen openen!

THE BIG SLEEP
Good morning humanity, what did you do today?

Life is guided by COVID-19. When the lockdown came we could not help thinking about its effect on the human condition. This brought about visions of awkward sleeping bodies everywhere, others watching, a flipside to The Big Sleep in which chaos emerges and has to be resolved. The resolve will unfold on the walls of the space.

Kamilė
‘Human look-a-likes roaming a full city, park, mall, hallway – some space and they all suddenly fall asleep on wherever they were. While sleeping is a peaceful act it all just looks wrong. Uncomfortable bodies, almost painful or awkward represent the odd chaos that we have now. A feeling of this weird stop, but also as if it is slipping just beneath you.

I develop my work from compositional focal points placed on a canvas. In this case the imagined scenes – always featuring a human figure- that form such a focal point will be placed on the walls. They have to relate to one another and to Klaske’s contributions. Within the circumstances offered by this residency I want to work together, further develop my technique, dig into this feeling that haunts me, connect it what I already know, and put all of this into visuals’.

Klaske
‘These days the world seems to spin slower than usual, but the sense of peace this should have given in other circumstances now makes me feel restless and uncomfortable. I want to fall asleep, I try my bed but it’s too cozy! It doesn’t fit my mood. I try the stairs, that’s more like it. I fall asleep with my legs where my arms are supposed to be.

For this exhibition I want to continue my urge to experiment with different materials and media; photographs, painting, text, fabric and objects from my daily life. It will be the starting point of trying to express the feeling of this awkward uncomfortable sleep. 

Esiri Erheriene-Essi uses family snapshots as starting points for her paintings. She made me think about ways in which I could mix the fascination I have for non art things into the painting in my artistic practice, and vice versa. I, for example, do not want to exclude the possibility of painting on toasted bread, or making a version of a paintings that turns out to be an object we come across in our lives on a daily basis. The dualism found in the uncomfortable and awkward yet peaceful sleep can be shown in many ways and suggest further associations. What are people dreaming about? Are they in a state of doubt, are they stuck in a certain situation, or do they like it? What is awkward and to who? What’s next? Will there be a wake-up call?
We will merge our practices, working our way through our -to some extent shared- imaginations. Using and expanding on our respective practices we make these imaginations visible on the walls of the project space. Meanwhile we without a doubt reasons for our doing and making along the way as well as new concepts through shared thinking will’.

In their new work, Klaske Bootsma and Kamilė Česnavičiūtė show a range of social interactions that consider the value of the individual in a group. Their work in SIGN will also critically relate to this fact within today’s society. Even when circumstances change.

Due to the corona crisis, SIGN has changed its programming a bit. This has created space to give the before mentioned young Groningen artists the opportunity to create new works during a working period and to present them at a subsequent exhibition that is completely corona-proof. Especially in these uncertain times, SIGN considers it important to continue to stimulate the development of young artists.

Creating a world of its own on the walls, in the shop window and in the space of SIGN – that is the assignment for Klaske Bootsma and Kamilė Česnavičiūtė, two artists with a similar method of drawing and painting, and also related to the subject, where the human condition is central. With BIG SLEEP they reflect on the collective slumber in which the world now seems to be sunk – what is behind our closed eyelids, and what does this waking sleep cover?

This is shown in the form of large monumental composite works on the wall, collages, murals and drawings, but also on the basis of poster-like textual expressions and all kinds of combinations thereof. From associative to narrative, from being lost on its own to a cartoon, from everyone in their own specific space, to each other or partly together – everything is possible in SIGN.

From 3 June, the work of Klaske and Kamilė will be visible from the inside and outside, through the shop window at the front and the back door of the garage area – with BIG SLEEP, the various possibilities of the SIGN building are made clear again. Unfortunately, due to the current circumstances, there is no opening, but we plan to organize a closing at Friday 27th of June at 18.00 hrs . Keep an eye on the reports for this.

About the artists
Klaske Bootsma
At the beginning of this year, Klaske Bootsma (Netherlands, 1995) stayed in the former dairy in Kolderveen as part of the residence project “Wasteland Kolderveen | Klaske is bored”, organized by SIGN and KiK Kolderveen in the context of Artist in Space (Noordenaars and We the North). As a follow-up to this project, Klaske has now been invited to BIG SLEEP in the context of “Commissioning and mentoring”, subsidized by the Mondriaan Fund and linked to the Artist in Space project. During the project in SIGN, both Klaske and Kamile received mentoring from Andrea Stultiens (http://www.andreastultiens.nl/).
Klaske Bootsma graduated from Minerva Academy in 2018. During her studies as well as in her artistic practice, self-examination plays an important role for Klaske – what is fair? What is real? When does a certain type of daily act become art? Her focus during the working period is on an ‘in-between mood’, a kind of empty space where we are in due to the current circumstances and where everything – and nothing – is possible. Kamilė Česnavičiūtė
The large, colorful work of Kamilė Česnavičiūtė (Lithuania, 1996) focuses on human-like figures – seated at strange angles, in contact with other figures and objects, or alone, represented by a combination of painting and drawing. Kamilė invites you to reflect on the unreal scenes in her work on how we live together and what our own position is in it. Kamilė graduated from Minerva Academy in 2019. She recently won the Sluijters Prize 2020 for Young Talent in Painting and she has also been nominated for the Buning Brongers Prize 2020. Due to the corona virus, SIGN has a door policy. Three visitors may enter at the same time. There are two entrances during opening hours in June: Winschoterkade 10 and Radebinnensingel. The work can also be seen from the street.

Unlocked / Reconnected
SIGN also participates in the national initiative Unlocked / Reconnected. Certain works from BIG SLEEP, which are also clearly visible from the outside, are part of this and were specially made for this by Kamile and Klaske. Unlocked / Reconnected is a collective exhibition from 1 June to 1 September 2020, in which 200 national ‘houses for art’ participate. The starting point for “Unlocked / Reconnected” is the idea of ​​solidarity, the will to reflect together on what (t) house is.
